I have been working at zulily full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    • Working atmosphere: friendly and diverse coworkers (including management), no dress code, free coffee and tea, employee cafeteria food is good, no rules against checking personal email/taking personal calls within reason, office is one block from the waterfront, some desks have good views, overall upbeat/non-stressful atmosphere
    • Work-life balance: many employees are not expected to check work email after hours, phones are not really utilized except for emergencies, there are always other staff around to help if you are struggling, plenty of orientation and training to ease employees into new tasks with minimal stress
    • Benefits: relatively generous PTO, health insurance and retirement plans are OK, small gym area available to employees at no charge, company offers some volunteer opportunities for interested employees, small employee discount

    Cons

    • Compensation: non-management employees paid notoriously low, many live paycheck-to-paycheck, employee cafeteria and neighborhood restaurants are expensive, third party-owned paid parking garage costs around $200/month, no transportation stipend or bus pass, management knows employees need more compensation but their solution is to create more management positions
    • Management/leadership: constantly coming up with new ways to micromanage workloads and skill sets, some managers are younger and less experienced than some of the employees they are supervising, lots of middle managers because of focus on promotions in lieu of fair wages for all
    • Work-life balance: hard to take on extra responsibilities or projects (to aim for a raise) when workloads are always increasing, quantity valued over quality, employees spend considerable time commuting to and from work because they can't afford to live downtown

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company culture is wonderful, and operations are efficient for the most part, but please don't pretend everything is great when so many of your employees are truly struggling to make ends meet.

I have been working at zulily full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great environment, nice new building. Gym across the street for free. Great cafeteria that's open for breakfast and lunch.

    Cons

Pay is low compared to similar jobs in Seattle. They are a start-up company but should be able to start compensating their employees better now. Management doesn't always work together well and this has become very frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work better together. Be a team and do what's best for the business, not for you and your own team.

I have been working at zulily full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are so many smart and experienced people to learn from across all divisions. While it can be a sink or swim environment, if you can swim, you'll go far.

    Cons

Processes or asks from management can quickly change. I chalk this up to growing pains.

I have been working at zulily full-time

    Pros

Great culture and atmosphere. A great place to start a career in the e-commerce space. Being a part of a rapidly growing company that is making history. Ability to move up quickly if so desired and you are willing to take on extra responsibility. Strong leadership (especially in Merchandising) with years of retail experience before coming to zulily. People passionate about serving up the very best product to our customers.
Love this company. One of the BEST places I have ever worked. Taught me how to be more flexible and open to change, because there is a lot of it. Able to be innovative and put your ideas to work. Some may not work, and that is ok...that is the beauty of the business. Getting to work with a lot of talented folks. Also, getting to support and coach with people new to the business and see them move up in the company. Very rewarding!

    Cons

Compensation at all levels needs to be addressed. Especially those at the lower end of the pay scale. Transportation costs and parking are very, very expensive and hourly and low salaried employees can barely make ends meet.
Long hours evenings and weekends. Management is working on this, but until the Studio is able to get on or should I even say ahead of schedule, Assistant buyers and buyers continue to work long hours and have to sacrifice personal time to make sure events are complete. This has been an ongoing issue for as long as I can remember and something in the process needs to be fixed and soon as this is causing a lot of frustration and burn out. We are losing good people to other BIG retailers in the area due to this and compensation.
Not allowed to "work from home" which for a "tech" company, should be allowed with guidelines. Unless you live in Seattle, commute times in and especially out of the area are BAD, really BAD. Management needs to be flexible with hours because of this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees about compensation and transportation
    Pay them better-at all levels.
Fix the processes/problems with Studio not completing events at least a day ahead so the Merchandising team can have a work/life balance.

I have been working at zulily full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The company is still so young and there is so much impact that can be made. It's incredibly exciting. They're not afraid to let people exercise their judgment and work creatively. It's FAST paced, and there aren't a whole lot of marching orders. You have to work well with little direction, be able to find your own answers, and be open to LOTS of change.

A lot of other reviewers tend to winge about the pay being low. True, zulily does not pay what Amazon pays. If you want to make top dollar and have your soul sucked out of you, then sure, go to Amazon. But if you want somewhat of a personal life, the pay is generally pretty competitive.

    Cons

People can tend to be impatient. zulily is 4 years old, and like a child who is 4 years old, sometimes you'll hear "ARE WE THERE YET?!" being screamed from the back seat.

So, as they say: if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Culture is difficult to scale! Beware of bringing on managers who are going to steamroll and ax-wield.

I have been working at zulily full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You can gain valuable experience here doing work beyond your qualifications. Studio management believes in cheap labor so rather than hire some one skilled in a particular field, they get a novice. Their loss is your gain!

    Cons

The honeymoon can last about two years, then You actually have some decent experience. At that point you will want to get paid for the work you've been doing but good luck with that. Think you can't be replaced? See second sentence in "pros".

Studio is like a creative sweat shop.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's not really middle management. It's directives from the executives. You don't have to reinvent the wheel in everything. Hire some skilled people in studio, pay them well, and Learn from their insight. In the end you'll save money.

I have been working at zulily full-time for more than a year

    Pros

zulily has a great atmosphere. The people are always so friendly and the dress code is relaxed. There is room for movement within the company and opportunity for you to be at the forefront of change.

    Cons

The big one... low compensation. They definitely low ball and make it difficult for you to get raises. The work load is high too. There's also little direction from management in developing skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer competitive salaries. OR accept that there's going to be a high turnover rate. Team outings are not enough to cover cost-of-living.

I have been working at zulily full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Casual work environment, easy job. I can wear whatever I want to the office, there is a locker room, showers, and small (only a few pieces of equipment) gym for our use. All the Seattle's Best Coffee, Tazo Tea and Starbucks hot chocolate we can drink.

    Cons

Low pay, little advancement opportunities, no camaraderie. They take advantage of writers who don't have other opportunities and pay them very little. Turnover is high because, once the writers realize they are worth more, they find better jobs. Management has been constantly changing and hesitant to change anything or try new things.

Advancement is nigh impossible, as only 4% of the company is eligible for a raise each quarter. Every raise has to go through the CEO and get his approval. For how much this company makes, they sure can be stingy with their lowest rung.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The shift in focus to higher gains has lowered workplace morale, causing a lot of disillusionment in company goals.

I have been working at zulily full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Positive, friendly atmosphere. Casual, play-centric culture, management is open to suggestion almost to a fault. Flexible scheduling.

    Cons

Poor hiring patterns (high turnover with no backfilling so people go weeks or months doing the work of 3 or 4 people) , low, LOW compensation with virtually no raises, sloppy processes excused by the "we're a start-up" song and dance. We're not a start-up, we're a publicly traded company with an enormous disparity of income between the exec level and the rest of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop weaseling out of paying for services. Give people proper, market-rate compensation, give proper benefits instead of asking people to cut chunks out of their healthcare benefits in order to cover transportation costs, stop undercutting the entire freelance market with your low rates, stop hiring people to low rates by promising lots of overtime and then refusing to allow anyone to work OT hours, and stop relying on salaried employees working 50-65 hour weeks on a regular basis with no overtime pay. When you treat people like they are replaceable, guess what? You will have to replace them.
