My roles during this project were as one of the two programmers for our game, but also consisted of designing and planning documents (such as the game design document), making art assets and creating a efficient art pipeline for our game.
Planning for this project consisted of preliminary brainstorming for game ideas or premises. Once that had been decided, further planning and decisions had to be made and documented. Aspects such as the art style, the code we were going to use to implement the game, the theme of our game, the music, the story, and the timeline/benchmarks for the project. All of this information was complied into a game design document, which we used as a reference while the project progressed.
A major challenge encountered was a team member who was simply not doing the work she needed to be doing. As our only artist, we were relying on her to create all the art assets for our game. However, she would not make deadlines, would not come to meetings to plan or work on the game, and was overall not willing to put the effort it. As a result I personally had to take on the role of technical-artist in order to make sure the art we needed for our game was make. I ended up creating the majority of the art that actually ended up in the game, such as menus, buttons, backdrops, characters, units, text, animations, and the like.
The result of this project ended up being very good despite the issues encountered. A great amount of effort was put into the project in order to make sure that the final product was up to our standards and presentable. Our game ended up winning an award for best technical design/programming as a result.
