Interviewed Jan 2012 in Tallahassee, FL (took 2 days)
It starts with initial contact via email. From there, you email the recruiter, and they then email you back with the job application, company overview and history, and assessment.
After that is completed, they call you, usually the next day. They speak with you for about an hour about the position and this is your initial telephone interview. They ask you a series of questions, and based on your response to one particular question, they choose whether to continue the telephone interview or tell you that you aren't a good fit for the company. If the telephone interview is completed with you and you want to continue in the process, they then schedule a time for you to meet with the local sales manager you'll be working for.
The interview with the area sales manager is quick and pretty redundant. You later learn that whatever was said in response to your questions in the interview is a lie. If you aren't hired, you're told in the interview that you'll be contacted regardless, but you will find that you are given the run around.
Overall, the process is simple and straightforward until the end where you're given the run around. It's very unprofessional and makes you feel as though you've wasted your time. I was told by someone completely unrelated to the recruitment process that the only reason I didn't get the position is b/c someone else had more sales experience than myself; it wouldn't have been such a big deal had she not been told that by the same person I had just got off the phone with (area sales manager) who said it wasn't his choice who's hired.

Interviewed Dec 2011 in Houston, TX (took a day)
i applied online through craigslist which the ad was disguised so you couldnt know what company it was. i. was called for an interview 2 months after submitting resume through craigslist for an interview the next day. i arrive with 6 other people, which at that oint gave me a red flag in my mind. the workers were very professional although there were only 2 staff members. the interview was a regional manager and looking to start a new division in houston. the guy along with another guy had just moved here from austin, establishing territories there. they moved into a chase bank building, where they are currently leasing office spaces. for an hour one of the recruiters/managers went into the sales pitch of the company benefits, pay structure, why the company is the best and so on. basically you are listening to someone sell the company before you are interviewed one on one. after an one hour presentation i was taken into another room for an interview. the guy asks me about past experience, how would i be able to lead a sales team, personal mentoring tactics. he offered me the job but i declined it and gave him my reasons why. i asked the guy if the opportunity was so great then why mislead people thinking something that it is not? nowhere in the ad was there advertising for outside sales involved. secondly, bashing corporate america jobs is not professional just because the work schedule is from 1-8 instead of a traditional 8-5 or 9-6. based on my senior level management background and my master's degree, i am commission based plus overrides of sales team? he apologized and stated it was the highest compensated position under regional manager which in order to get there, you have to serve as a sales manager and work out in the field knocking on 50-75 doors a day. At that point, I thanked him for his time and shook his hand to depart. As I stood up, he wanted to have me speak with a director in a week's time to discuss the job and i simply declined again. i told him its a waste of time for both of us if im not interested in the offer and for someone else to convince me otherwise. the gentleman politely said that i would love to have you hear with us and suddenly became desperate and told me that he had not been successful in the city thus far and he would put an incentive for me if i took the job offer. once i again, i thanked him for his time and left. he stated that he would call me in a few weeks to follow up with me and i told him it was perfectly fine.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
the ad on craigslist was misleading to an actually career per say and compensation was commission-based...very low.pay......tasks at hand were not in my interest and selling the company before the actually interview took place. was a turn off. the fact that if someone sales an alarm system a day for 365 days at $250 commission, you would earn 65,000 a year. needless to say if that was the case, many other companies would not exist and the alarm industry would be fully loaded with people that you wouldnt be able to hold everyone in and eventually cut commissions literally in half. ..in a nutshell, i didnt buy they sales pitch

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Aurora, CO (took 5 days)
Initial letter from Careerbuilder. Obviously they are casting a wide net since they must have a large turnover rate. In this economy when an employer resorts to contacting you, it must be hard for them to get and keep talent. The interview process was similar to others. A phone interview first from a recruiter, needed to update profile on web, then told that the hiring manager wanted to meet with me. Although the position was based in Colorado Springs, the interview was up in Aurora, a good hour and fifteen minute drive. The initial interview (I was expecting a 1-1) was actually a group cattle call. They presented the same information they gave on a powerpoint document and then took us off for private 15 minute interviews. There were 4 of us at this meeting, although the sign up sheet indicated they expected at least 6. At the private interview Ithe hiring manager said he wanted to see me again for a more in depth interview and that I should email my recruiter and he would let her know when he could schedule my second interview. I was told the second would be in the Colorado Springs office where the position was based. However, when I was given the time/date and I confirmed that it would be in the Springs, was told that no, something had come up and I needed to go back to Denver for the second one. During the second interview I was asked a lot of prepared questions and the hiring manager seemed totally uninterested in the process. I felt like he was just going through the motions.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
What they originally told me vs what they said when they made the offer was quite different. Salary range was much lower, was told $50K first year, but manager said more like $35 - 45. Told they had protected territories when manager said no. Told it was small business but manager said needed to sell everything to make quotas. And last, although the position was in Colorado Springs, was told I needed to train up in Denver for at least several weeks. Most of this came out after the offer was made.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Saint Louis, MO (took 2 weeks)
During phone interviews they ask if you are confortable with commission only income and door to door sales. Also ask why you want to get into sales and what is the best way for you to generate leads. If they feel comfortable with your answers they set up a 1:1 interview with Director of Sales of the area. First thing he did was get a copy of my resume and mainly asked questions about my previous jobs. He asked me a few situational questions on how I would generate leads in my previous sales positions. Also asked what my motivation was to be in sales.
