Interviewed Sep 2010 in Chicago, IL (took a day)
Process started with me contacting the office manager and forwarding my resume. I was then asked to complete a "features and benefits" analysis outlining what expertise and client potential I would be bringing to the table. They then did some internal reviews across several office locations to check on my reputation and to determine what kind of demand there would be on projects other than those originating in the Chicago office. I then had an in-person interview at the Chicago office with the practice manager and two other senior technical staff members/

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Portland, OR (took 3 weeks)
Applied online, called for interview about a week later. Felt that the interview went well, enjoyed speaking with the 2 interviewers. Office was spacious and clean. Based in interview and information I felt that it would have been a good place to work. Felt positive about getting a follow up interview - but did not. Called to follow up, did not receive a call back. No communication for 3 weeks, found out from someone else that they hired another person.

Interviewed Jul 2009 (took 2 weeks)
The AMEC interview process depends on the office that you are applying to. Usually, you submit a resume online or a recruiter finds you. At that point, the recruiter may conduct the initial interview or the HR rep from the office will contact you and set up a phone interview. Then comes the actual paper application and 1:1 interview. There may be several 1:1 or 1:1+ interviews and you may be required to fly to the office on your own dime. Depending on the level of the position, AMEC may pay for transportation costs. If you are offered a position, you will be contacted by telephone by the Unit Manager for a verbal offer and then AMEC will follow that up with a letter offer that must be signed and returned. Once that happns you go in for your drug test and fill out the paperwork for a background check. On your first day, plan on spending a good 8 hours going through trainings (health & safety, driving, ethics, etc), introductions, perhaps a lunch. Then you get to work!
When interviewing in person, it is important to be specific, friendly, show that you can work in a group, take criticism, make changes to a method or project that you may not agree with, etc. Our managers do not care for individuals who appear smug, holier-than-thou, or are not knowledgeable and confident in their skills. State how you have improved processes to make them more efficient, how you can save the company money, and above all, be respectful of both the men and women in the interview. Sometimes the person making the decision is not the senior person in the room.
The work culture is casual and friendly. You can wear jeans or casual pants to work. No open toed shoes or shorts are permitted for safety reasons. We periodically have summer and winter parties and once a month have health & safety meetings that might involve food and fun activities.
