    Research Manager Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

The process took 2+ monthsinterviewed at ATB Financial.

    Interview

Pre-screen interview, In-person interview with manager, then In-person interview with manager, director, and co-worker. I had to provide references and do a written test. Pros: Fast to get back to me about next steps via email (no phone tag) Cons: Location of interviews was way out by the Airport, quite a time investment given I had to be there multiple times. The thing that really irritated me was that after 3 interviews someone who wasn't involved in the hiring process called me to say "they would not be continuing with my application." And she had no information on why. At the very least they owe me a brief explanation e.g. they want more years experience, more knowledge on banking industry, whatever! Any decent employer owes a candidate that much after that far down the interview process

    Interview Questions

    • Fairly standard questions about the role, but then they asked some bizarre questions about my knowledge of ATB. For example: "Because you're a researcher, can you tell me who the VP of our investor relations department is?" Clearly I had no idea. Even if I had googled their org chart or stalked them on LinkedIn that would not be something I would remember. If I had to guess it was my lack of knowledge on the company that didn't get me the job. I did not realize they would be so extreme about it though. No one would know that level of detail unless they were an internal applicant. They also included a written knowledge test, which I found easy, but I suppose could be a hurdle if you weren't knowledgeable about research methodology and statistics.   Answer Question

    Interview

Applied online and received an e-mail a week later asking me to come in for an interview. They were pretty inflexible scheduling the interview around work hours. I was 10 minutes early and the interviewer was 20 minutes late (even though she came out to greet me at our scheduled interview time, then disappeared completely). Was interviewed by both the in-person manager and a video-conferencing colleague. Fairly simple behavioural interview, no surprise questions or tricks.

    Interview Questions

    • They gave me two pages of a land contract document then asked me to walk them through the process of how I would go about figuring out what the writer needed.   Answer Question

    Reasons for Declining

Unattractive and noncompetitive compensation, location was far away and not close to anything.

    Interview

Extensive interview process that consists of multiple interviews over an extended period of time. The HR team is great and very friendly. The interview process was very intense, but the individuals I dealt with were very open and honest from the beginning which I appreciated. It was a great learning experience and their rigorous process is what makes them a top employer.

    Interview Questions

    • Very thorough, especially technical questions in regards to financial statement analysis.   Answer Question

    Interview

I applied online. I was called a couple days later and had an interview setup for the next day after being called. The interview process was fairly straightforward. They tell you a little about ATB and their work culture, then the proceed to ask you questions, and at the end you ask them questions.

    Interview Questions

    • The most difficult question for me was "How would you sell X product to a customer".   Answer Question

    Negotiation

There was no negotiation. They offered me the position and I accepted and they told me what my starting wage would be.
