Sales Associate Interview

Sales Associate
McKinney, TX

I applied online and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Academy Sports & Outdoors in May 2010.

Interview Details – I had recently just quit Dick's Sporting Goods, which was a terrible place by the way, to work someplace else. I went in for two interviews here. The first one was pretty formal, while asking the standard questions and how you would react in certain situations, kind of like a personality test. Then the second one was more personal, conducted by the guy I was going to work for, He asked about my sports background, work experience, and how I would interact with other employees and customers. All in all, it was an easy process as long as you can be honest. Managers were very even keel and willing to listen to what you had to say. Employees would also be friendly with you as you waited to get interviewed.

Interview Question – Just reaction questions like, "how would you react is someone said/did this, or if they asked that?" just moral questions to make sure employee has a decent moral compass   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – Pay was decent, so there wasn't any real negotiating required

I applied online and the process took 3 days - interviewed at Academy Sports & Outdoors.

Interview Details – After applying online I was contacted by phone and an interview time was arranged. I arrived an hour late on accident due to (I believe) miscommunication on their part. However, I apologized and went on in the interview. My interviewer was a store manager and very thoroughly went threw my work history, after which I was told on the spot that I was hired.

Interview Question – Biggest challenge?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – Was told there was a base level price all associates were hired at, however I later found out it could be negotiated higher as some coworkers had successfully done so.

I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Academy Sports & Outdoors in July 2013.

Interview Details – Applied online and got a call two days later for an interview. Asked typical retail interview questions about your past work experience. Also asked scenario questions like "what would you do..." A few days later got a call offering me the job and they told me my starting pay. Went in for some more info on the position and was told to come in again the next week to do the actual paperwork.

Interview Question – What would you do if a new policy was put in place that you don't agree with?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No negotiation, they tell you what they'll pay and that's about it.

I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Academy Sports & Outdoors in January 2014.

Interview Details – I applied online and was contacted for an interview about a week later. I was interviewed by 3 people (a panel). They asked me about my education and work history, strengths, weaknesses, what I knew about the position, salary requirements, etc. The questions were fairly straight-forward and predictable. The interview only lasted about 10-15 minutes overall.

Interview Question – They asked how many words per minute I typed.   Answer Question

Advertising Manager Interview

Advertising Manager
Katy, TX

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 5 days - interviewed at Academy Sports & Outdoors in December 2013.

Interview Details – After one phone call with the hiring manager, I was flown to Houston for an in-person interview. While there I interviewed with a number of people all asking the same set of questions. The interview process was not to discuss skills and experience so much as it was to determine a person's personality.

Interview Question – Applicants are subject to a value judgment based on the company's personality blocks. Much like Lego blocks, they are four different colors, each representing a personality type, red for Type A, etc. The four blocks are then stacked by the interviewer in the order they have judged your personality and working style from top to bottom. The process seemed to go against the principles of EEOC laws and standards.   Answer Question
