Interviewed Mar 2012 in San Diego, CA (took 6 weeks)
GA-ASI is currently taking advantage of the ‘buyer’s market’ economy right now by giving low offers. They hired several acquaintances at large raises, and then started giving low offers as more engineers were on the market. They moved extremely slowly. I waited two weeks before I called them, and got no call back. I called a week later and was told they were still interviewing. While they were taking forever I took another offer. Process consisted of a phone interview, with someone who had no social skills, and a panel interview.
Phone interview, consisting of general overview and 8 ‘programming’ questions:
- How many bits in a byte
- What is malloc?
- Bitwise AND two 8 bit numbers
Panel interview with 2 engineers and 2 managers:
- Write a function on the board that compares the 7th position in an 8 bit binary number to the 4th position in another 8 bit binary number. Return true is equal.
- Brain teaser
- They had a large piece of paper on the wall with a C/C++ (more C style) program written on it that you had to analyze. It consisted of a pointer, P1, being initialized to a char array, and pointers P2 and P3 being initialized to P1. A while loop runs with the condition (*P1++ = *P3++). Then the 3 pointers are printf-ed. Knowledge of C style programming/’multiple actions per line’ was important for this problem, even if it’s not on your resume and even though they are coding in C#.

Interviewed May 2009 in Poway, CA (took 3 months)
HR initially told me I was not qualified. I spoke with a hiring manager who indicated I had just the right background (the same as his background). HR fought me every step of the way. HR at GA-ASI is the worst I have ever dealt with.
The interview was with 5 individual hiring managers in series. They are all looking for a particular niche to fill what they are missing and questions revolve around production knowledge and management style. How you deal with people etc.
Something to note with GA, your personality is a major driver to the hire/no hire decision. You need to be able to get along with people. No egos (fighter pilots). This will sink you faster than anything. High EQ individuals will do well especially if you can read your interviewer.

Negotiation Details
There was no negotiation. The HR rep made this a take it or leave it offer. I checked with the hiring manager because I felt the offer was low. He indicated there was no opportunity to negotiate salary.
Note: This was an internal transfer.

Interviewed Feb 2011 in Poway, CA (took a day)
It started with a phone interview. The phone interview consisted of questions on C/C++, Object Oriented Concepts and one or two puzzle questions.
The onsite interview started with half an hour recruiter interview, then a panel interview. The panel interview consisted of mainly questions going over your resume. Then a skills test with an hour time was given.
The skills test was creating a dynamic array using classes and printing the elements of the array.

Interviewed Mar 2011 in Poway, CA (took a day)
The process was pretty straightforward. I submitted my resume on the company website and received an e-mail and phone call asking for a phone interview several weeks later. The phone interview was scheduled to be an hour long but took only about 30 mins, and consisted of pretty straightforward questions.
I was asked what my hobbies and interests are, and a few technical questions about circuit elements. All in all, it was a quick, clean, and low-pressure interview with very friendly interviewers. They responded the next day with their decision, which was very convenient.

Interviewed Nov 2010 in San Diego, CA (took 3 months)
Very long process, requires several phone conversations, in person interview, panel interview, back ground check, drug test then you might finally get an offer. If you are interested, you better be patient, but the job pay and benefits are likely worth the wait.

Interviewed Sep 2010 in Poway, CA (took 4+ weeks)
Starts out with a phone interview from a senior member of the team you are interviewing for. Next if you pass the phone interview there is a meeting with a tech recruiter, followed immediately by a meeting with two people from the team. During this meeting they give you a tour of the facility followed by a programing test.

Interviewed Aug 2010 in San Diego, CA (took a day)
First is a phone screening, which I thought was very technical. Mostly c based questions; use of keywords volatile, register. Concepts of RTOS, an occasional odd math question like "what is the derivative of velocity", then followed by a trig function, given a triangle, describe how one would fine the sine angle.
The on site interview process consisted of first meeting the recruiter, who gives you a pamphlet of the company benefits and briefly tells you about the history and back story of the group.
Then a technical interview is followed, in my case done by two members of the engineering group. Since I was applying for a position which required c/c++ experience, they wanted to hear details about my past experience in the previous employers.
My perception was they seemed to be strictly by the numbers in terms of experience, so if you are applying for a position that requires 5+ yrs of c/c++, then you better have directly 5+ yrs of being a c/c++ drone. A "technologist" who moves between technologies wouldn't cut make the numbers.
They give you a tour of the facilities and the systems they develop.
Then a skills test is followed in which you are given a programming problem on a laptop and asked to finish the program. If your comfortable on linux, you should do fine at this point, since it was a redhat laptop.
The program was in c and dealt with mostly string parsing; you are given a buffer that needs to match a formatted string format.
I liked this aspect of the interview, usually one doesn't get a laptop and a program to work on but usually whiteboard problems.
Anyhow, my overall perception for this specific division ( UAV ), it's a large legacy application in which new features are added too. When asked about whether they embrace new technologies? the general consensus was "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". As suspected, when asked about tribal knowledge, the response was it's an occurring problem their trying to address by better and more :) documentation.
The main reason I pursued this position at ga-asi was because of the stability and the 9/80 schedule. After getting a better idea of the technology used and the application support that is done, I doubt I would have learned much.

Interviewed Jun 2010 in Poway, CA (took a day)
This was an invitational interview that took almost 4 hours to complete. It started with a chat with an HR rep to determine if you were a fit for the position. Then I spoke with an engineer that asked some more questions related to the job, once again to determine whether I should move on. After that, I moved on the "technical questions" guy that asked questions related to schematics and general electronics theory. Once that was over, the interview concluded with a 1 on 1 with the hiring manager.

Interviewed Nov 2009 (took 1 week)
I was called to set up an on-site interview and received an e-mail with the times and names of the people I was to interview. First, I met an HR person to discuss the company, interview process and position. I thought that I was going to have two interviews for two positions, but it turned out to be a interview for both positions at the same time. This made it hard for me to focus on each of the positions. The panel asked me about my experience and resume. Then they took what I thought was an inordinate amount of time giving me a basic C programming quiz. The entire process took an hour and a half. I went in for a second interview a few weeks later, but have not heard back.

Interviewed Aug 2008 in San Diego, CA (took 2 days)
My interview at General Atomics - RSG was a pretty typical engineering interview. It consisted of a phone interview, then a panel interview, then a 1:1 interview followed by a skills test over a 2 day period. Once all that was out of the way it took them about 7 days to put together an offer.
