Interviewed Sep 2009 in Atlanta, GA (took a day)
Hiring and Interview Process were pretty standard; informal group setting. I was asked to do a "take home" excel spreadsheet exam to prove I could use Excel...fairly easy.
I didn't get the offer b/c I didn't have a 4 year college degree (I only had a 2 year degree) even though I had over 20 years aviation maintenance experience.

AirTran is a very busy company and moves fast but it did take long to get to the final stages of getting hired because recruiters go through so many applications. Southwest culture is very important to them...You either fit or you don't....You can't fake it

Understand wanting to understand how candidates process problems, but trying to figure how many quarters it would take to get to the top of the empire state building or my favorite ice cream between behavioral questions was a little off putting.

Interviewed Mar 2009 in Atlanta, GA (took a day)
sat for my first internship interview last year, two bored airline junior executives asked me the standard battery of personality questions, to which I gave well-prepared answers. They asked me to estimate how many ping-pong balls I could fit in a 737, seeking insight into my problem-solving skills. They asked what kind of car their airline would be, if it were a car. A vision of life as a mid-level airline executive flashed before my eyes – an episode of The Office with frequent flier discounts.
After the interview, the recruiters told the career services folks that I was the most interesting candidate they had met. The career counselor couldn’t be sure if ‘interesting’ was a good thing or bad. Heaven help me if I ever have to work where I have to wonder if interesting is good.

Interviewed Aug 2008 (took 4 days)
It took Air Tran about 4-5 months to respond to my initial application but that's somewhat understandable given the economy at the time. I was called in for a one on one interview with a company recruiter. At the interview we went into a small side office where she asked me many questions about my position at my last job and how I thought that I could contribute to Air Tran. She also had me answer situational questions. I.e. "how would you handle this situation if that happened?" types of questions. I answered as truthfully as possible and was dismissed. She told me that she would be in touch in a few days and she was.

There was no negotiation. It was an "all-or-nothing" deal. You take the job, the salary and the listed benefits or we part ways and you keep looking.

Interviewed Nov 2009 (took 2 weeks)
After applying online,I received an invite to attend an information session on becoming a flight attendant. When I arrived, I stood in line to sign in my name to a corresponding number and was asked on the sign in sheet to list whether or not I had a passport. I was then directed into a room with about 60 other hopefuls for the job. We were given an overview of the company and all the duties of a flight attendant. At the end of the presentation, we were asked one by one to stand in front of the group to read a passage. A few days later, I was called back in for a one on one interview about my job history and educational background.
