Interviewed Oct 2011 in Mesa, AZ (took 5 days)
Initially started with a contact through my university, and then progressed to a phone interviews before getting into the in person interview. The process was smooth and rather fast.
Minor difficulties in the actual hiring process due to being a remote worker, and several time zones away from H.R. but nothing that wasn't resolved in a few days with persistance.

Interviewed Feb 2009 in Annapolis, MD (took a day)
I was initially contacted by a recruiter at Alion Science and Technology who had found my resume on Monster.com. She asked me if I would be interested in a position that they were looking to fill. I read the posting and told her that I was interested. She set me up for an interview with the program manager. The day of the interview the interviewer showed up in jeans and a sweatshirt. He was obviously from more of a technical background so I didn't think to much of it. I believe that based off of my qualifications and experience, it was less like an interview and more like a briefing on the position and what my role would be if hired. I felt very early that he was trying to sell me more than find out if I was right for the position. From what I have heard about government contractors though, that seems to be the status quo. They just want to make sure you are not a nucklehead. The most important thing is that they can sell your experience and qualifications to the government when bidding for new service contracts.

Interviewed May 2009 in Washington, DC (took a day)
I update my resume on their website regularly I received a call from a recruiter about the new contract they won. I was asked to fill out a lot of paperwork before the interview. I met with the program manager a few days after the recruiter contacted me. I felt ready for the interview and was excited about the opportunity posted online. The position mentioned on their website and on other websites such as monster had different job titles with the same criteria.
I brought an updated version of my resume on nice resume paper, this was very different than the resume they had in their hand. The recruiter didn't give them the appropriate updated resume which is usually the case in most recruiter scheduled interviews.
The program manger reviewed my resume, asked me a little bit about what I currently do in my job. They asked me what a day in my job would look like, only after I asked the same question of this position. I later find out that the description posted all over the web may be something I take on but it may be very different since they don't have a task order yet. I was asked a few situational questions, when I wasn't sure the context of the events I asked a few more questions and then led with my response. The questions were asked to make me think on my feet as the position requires.
I asked if they felt that I was qualified for the position and if there's any recommendations to jump start my knowledge about the program. They gave me some pointers which will help me in my interview. It was the faster interview I've been on, only 30 minutes.
