Met with HR person after applying online. Interview lasted for about an hour. Consisted of basic background questions and a relatively short case study question. Took about 6-8 weeks to get a firm response that they were looking elsewhere.

Interviewed Nov 2011 (took 4+ weeks)
I thought the interview progressed as to be expected for a sales interview. A thorough review of my background starting from high school. They're looking for motivated, motivated, motivated, and ready to learn the Bernstein way. Looking for some sophistication, you need to be able to prove you're the type of person that can attract and retain wealthy clientele. Professional interviewers, no one with the intention to make you feel uncomfortable.

Interviewed Sep 2010 in New York, NY (took 2 days)
* AllianceBernstein's interviews are generally not that difficult, but they usually don't hire someone who's directly out of school, a PhD in hard science from a reputable school plus 1-2 years of working experience especially in some buy side hedge fund will be a big plus.
* AllianceBernstein is a US large cap long only manager, so usually option and derivatives will not be emphasized in the interview, more questions on statistics, estimations, general quant models, evaluating bias statistics will be asked. Also it's good to have a few good programming language on hand, such as Matlab, SAS, R, SQL, even if not asked during interview, it'll be your daily companion doing your job.
* Previous working experience in a hedge fund is valued, any experience doing long/short, market neutral, global macro, high frequency will be valued as the firm is shifting into those directions in terms of new products
* Be confident, eventually they only offer 1-2 offers among 30-40 PhD interviewed, but once you get in, life isn't so difficult compared to a hedge fund
Interview Questions
Negotiation Details
* They have a pretty established range for PhD graduates with 1-3 years working experiences, not much to negotiate. You trade in average or slightly below market average pay for an easy life style.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Philadelphia, PA (took 2 weeks)
I have 22 years experience in financial services and did not think Bernstein was a fit but a recruiter suggested I meet them anyway. After meeting with the Managing Director twice I was moved through the process to the hiring manager after taking a personality sales test. The hiring manager was extremely tough and made me tell my history going back to HS, ridiculous, and proceeded with a description of every position I've had in the industry. Bernstein does not want anyone that they can't brainwash into their system of selling which is very proprietary, not an independent or objective approach. They prefer to hire outsiders as opposed to financial service insiders so they can train them into the Bernstein system. The hiring manager did not like being questioned about losses in 2008 and or assets leaving to more independent firms. If you are in sales from a different industry and want to get into wealth management this could be a good fit but otherwise industry advisors with an independent objective approach should stay away.

Interviewed Sep 2010 in New York, NY (took a day)
Basic interview to start, then it switched to conceptual/brain teaser questions like what is the degree of the hour and minute hand at 11:45. 2nd interview was much of the same, but much more firm specific.

Interviewed Jan 2011 in New York, NY (took a day)
I had an initial phone interview which lasted about half hour. The person from HR who contacted me asked mostly about my previous work experience, and why I wanted to work for AB. A few days later, I was contacted to come in to their offices. I had two interviews. All behavioral questions, no technical.

Interviewed May 2010 in New York, NY (took 3 weeks)
Series of 1:1 interviews with each member of the team (some more than once) over about a three week span. The position had been vacant for some time, and I could tell that they were anxious to fill it as quickly as possible once a decent candidate had been found. Discussed professional experiences to date, educational background, why I was looking for new opportunities. Technical questions were asked in each interview. I was also asked a series of typical "brain teasers" during a few sessions.
The group was not especially considerate of my time during the interview process. Several meetings were cancelled at the last minute, and I was kept waiting.

Negotiation Details
Very little room to negotiate. Pay is known as the lowest on the street - though management will boast efforts to align pay with performance. If you take a job here, it's for the learning experience and potential career growth.
