Interviewed Mar 2012 (took 1+ week)
Had two phone interviews - one was behavioral and the second was more strategy based. Heard back that same day and was then accepted for 3 or 4 one-on-one in person interviews (one of them was an interview with the HR person so doesn't really count I guess).
Day before in-person interviews, had a tour of the fulfillment center - make sure to pay attention and ask questions since it's sort of a semi-interview. Also they'll ask general questions about the fulfillment center during the in-person interviews so pay attention!
On interview day, one interview was mostly behavioral (why amazon, weaknesses of amazon), another was a conversation about the future of amazon (know your stuff and don't be afraid of finding out flaws with Amazon's current business model), another was all lower-level programming questions (excel functions, sql) and the last was behavioral but tricky behavioral (what frustrates you about co-workers? don't answer this question, it's a trick question).

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Seattle, WA (took 2 months)
The interview process with Amazon was more rigorous than any other interview process I have ever experienced. I had 3 phone interviews before I went to Seattle for the on-site portion which consisted of 7 1x1 interviews with mostly technical and strategic questions. DO YOUR HOMEWORK if you want to get the job. I recommend reading “One Click,” a book about the rise of Amazon and some of the company’s achievements, the earnings reports, and spend an hour surfing the company website.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Seattle, WA (took 2 weeks)
This was my first serious interview ever. I was nervous when I got to Amazon. However, everyone that works there were very nice. I had 4 one on one interview within almost 3 hrs of time. They were seriously one after another with no break. Before you finish with the first one, the second will be waiting for you outside already. One of my advice is to ask to take a break. Go to the bathroom and refresh yourself in between. Overall, the interview process was good, but timing was very tight. Be sure to review your accounting/finance stuff, they sure ask a lot about it.

Interviewed Feb 2011 (took 4+ weeks)
Phone interview then in office interview at a warehouse. The questions were very straightforward and a lot about my impressions of the tour of the warehouse (what could be improved, what were they doing well, etc). Don't dress up for them, they told us no open toed shoes or ties but, ladies, you cannot wear close toed heels either.

Interviewed Jan 2011 in Munich (Germany) (took 2 months)
I was contacted a week after I sent my application to set up a phone interview. The phone interview took 45 minutes and was conducted by the Financial Manager. Questions: Why amazon. Strength/weaknesses. Background. Then there were three small cases (make a forecast for sales in Spain for one year, decide whether to add a TV or a book to the sortiment etc.) and 3 brainteasers.
Got an invitiation for the assessment center a week later, the ac was more than a month away. AC was in Munich and took 6,5 hours, no lunch :-)
The AC consited of:
- Company and job presentation by the HR and Finance people
- Applicant introduction round in English
- Group task (solve a sudoku in a group of 4 ppl)
- Excel test (pivot tables are important)
- Calculation test
- 2 separate 1:1 interviews with HR or finance ppl. This took forever, questions were completely redundant. Also they want you to give your in-depth opinion about the other applicants and your personal assessment of your performance in the group task. This part lasted 1 hour.
- Solve a business case (forcast for a product segement) in Excel in one hour (individual task)
- Individual presentation of your results, you present your results to the finance ppl, other applicants are not in the room
- Group discussion of the results (4 ppl)
- Group presentation of group results
Heard back from them after a week with no offer. What they are looking for are motivated, proactive and solution-oriented people, make sure to give them that impression.

Interviewed Dec 2009 in Seattle, WA (took 3 weeks)
I had one phone interview with the hiring manager, and a week later I was invited to an all day in-house interview with 7 Amazonians. These were all 1:1 interviews that lasted about 45 minutes each. One of the Amazon interviewers is labeled the "bar-raiser" (this is usually the toughest interview) and the purpose of this interview is to make sure that they are not just hiring somebody who is good but somebody who is a superstar at what they do. The office enviroment is pretty casual and they even allow you to bring your dog to work. The people seem to be very sharp and serious about their work.
