I've heard from others interviewing here that the hiring team tries to throw you off during one of your interview, but I didn't experience this. The people seem nice, but not overly friendly. The office is clean and very quiet. The culture is direct; yet, people are nice.

Very Difficult Interview
I applied in-person and the process took 4 months - interviewed at Amazon.com in June 2012.
Interview Details – Got an interview through an internal referral while interning.
Had a informal phone interview with the hiring manager. After about 2 weeks, had a formal phone interview with the hiring manager. After a week had a phone interview with a Senior Designer on that team.
After 2 weeks, was flown onsite for an onsite full interview loop. Interview consisted of 1:1 interviews with engineering, product management, designers, and a director and a portfolio presentation.
Took about 1 week to get final results.

Interview Details – I went through a recruiting agency who had informed me that Amazon was interested in an initial phone interview. The phone interview (30 minutes) was with the team lead who was really nice and gave me a good impression of the company, or at least the team I might be working with. They seemed to be genuinely interested in walking through my work (they let me choose which projects I was most proud of and then focused on those), asking me about process, and about how I would deal with a difficult client. I was also asked to talk about a success and a failure. Since I straddled visual and user experience, was asked which I was more serious about.
I had been interviewing since the previous week with other companies, so nothing I was asked to discuss was abnormal or surprising. I was very calm, straightforward, honest, and pleasantly myself. I sensed that this attitude made an impression with the interviewer as there were some casual, friendly laughs as well as comments that gave the impression that we were peers. Notably, a comment they made about my portfolio, something quirky that I'd included (let's call it my 'motto') told me that they value people who work very hard, have a true passion for their work, have confidence, and are willing to go above and beyond. Of course, with a top company like Amazon, that's a no-brainer.
So, I interviewed early on the week and by Friday morning had an offer from the recruiter. What the interviewer had said in passing that they valued (the aforementioned 'motto') makes me think that a large part of a successful, mutually beneficial Amazon match is hugely related to culture, if you already have the chops. Again, not surprising but definitely worth reinforcing.

Interview Details – The interview process was 7 interviews total.
The first two were one hour phone interviews. After these interviews I was asked to fly out (from the midwest to Seattle) for in-person interviews. This was 6 interviews with five people, starting at 10am and ending at 3pm.
Three of the interviews were just standard "meet and greet" format. The other three interviews were problem-solving exercises. Two were design problems, where a "how would you design/redesign this?" questions were asked and I was asked to show what I would design and what steps I would take to reach that design. The last one was an HTML/CSS exercise.
Although I felt that the interviews went well in general, I did not get the job. I was unable to get specific feedback about why I was turned down, but I suspect that I did not show enough UX experience in the problem solving part of the interview (more of my background is in visual design). I also know I could have done better in the HTML/CSS part--this was a pencil and paper test, and I'm more used to writing code in a text editor.

Interview Details – The hiring process was very robust, it tool almost multiple rounds (10+ ). First started with 2 telephonic rounds from US and then called for onsite at Hyderabad office. Couple of designs tests from US team using screen sharing. Then there were 5-6 team members have interviewed (1-1). The people were friendly and interviews were very logical + meaningful. I enjoyed the interview indeed, they focus more on the portfolio + design thinking.
