Interviewed Mar 2011 (took 3 days)
Met with the independent location principal several times including an in-office presentation by the principal summarizing the location's revenues, expenses and FA pay-structure. Opportunity for Q&A - also viewed the planning software/report format prepared for clients. Good opportunity to 'see' inside operations to get a feel for the team culture, brand & FA opportunity.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
Principal was considering changing 'brands' in the near future. No salary for FA...strictly commission. No depth of products offerings....primary product solutions are managed accounts. No training. Office pays for licensing. FA's have to pay for office space and expenses. Proposed a modest draw against commission for the first year which the principal declined.

I applied In-Person and the interview consisted of a 1:1 Interview, a Group/Panel Interview and a Presentation.

Interviewed Sep 2010 in Minneapolis, MN (took 3 days)
I was contacted by a recruiter who had seen my resume on Monster.com, and she sent me a personality profile assessment that I completed online. I was contacted the following day and asked to come in to the office and take a cognitive assessment. It was a 20 question multiple-choice exam and a candidate must get at least 12 correct to be considered for the job. I got 18/20 right (the test is difficult but dont overthink the questions). After that, I had a 1-on-1 interview with the recruiter. The following day I had another 1-on-1 interview with one of the sales managers, and about 20 minutes after the interview ended I received a call from the recruiter and I was offered the position.

Interviewed Mar 2008 in Honolulu, HI (took 2 weeks)
I applied online and got a call saying I had an interview. First I had to take a skills test assesment and a phone skills assesment. Then a intelligence test. The key was to pass all of the tests to move forward and get a 1:1 interview. Once I passed all the tests I had an interview with the regional manager and we basically went over my resume. Asked a few questions about what I would do in certain situations and so forth. It was a basic interview nothing out of the ordinary and I say it took about 45 minutes. Once it was over I had to wait about a week to get a call back and sat down and talked again with the manager. This time they hired me after the interview.

There are a total of four interviews. The first is a phone call, then a general meeting with a recruiter to better understand your skills, then another interview with someone higher in HR, then the last interview was mock phone call where you represent your sales skills.

Interviewed Aug 2008 in Seattle, WA (took a day)
Very informal. No technical questions of any kind. I was just coming out of undergraduate school. We mostly just discussed what the job consisted of. I got the impression that they were willing to hire me, because they don't pay new hires much, and they use a performance screening process during the first few months on the job to see who makes it to the next level.

Interviewed Nov 2008 (took 1+ week)
This particular office of Ameriprise seemed to be actively pursuing many job candidates. I crossed paths with other interviewees and heard mention that the HR person was at a few job fairs during the week. The interview process consisted of filling out a lenghty online application and attaching a resume. Afterwhich I had a brief phone interview, with the HR person who set up a face-to-face interview. Then came back for personality and skill tests, and a phone test that role plays with actors in different scenarios. After doing well in all tests, you get to meet the manager who hires and pretty much only cares that you know 200 people or more whom you can service.

Interviewed Mar 2007 (took 5 days)
Phone interview to see whether or not I'd be communicative over the phone, since the position requires a lot of cold calling. Next round was a computer test comprising of basic finance questions. Next, were 1:1 behavioral questions, and a few that questioned entrepreneurial traits, work ethic, and independent personality.

Negotiation Details
There were no negotiation options. The employee turnover rate is tremendously high, so they have structured payouts, meaning no budging for negotiations.

Interviewed Feb 2007 in Virginia Beach, VA (took 2 days)
The initial interview was a positive experience. I do not have sales experience and I didn't have a strong natural market so the odds were against me in the beginning. However, I did try during the trial/training period to bring in clients. I received training and support for phone scripts, meeting agendas and some product training. During the self study period for the licensing exams, I attended a weekly group meeting where we were introduced little by little to the company. I just regret that I didn't have more people in my circle to call on to join the company initially.
