I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Apple (New York, NY) in Jul 2011
Interview
In this order: online application, e-mail, phone interview, phone call, in person interview with specialized manager, phone call, in person interview with second-to-highest manager, phone call with job. Final phone call was a bit anxious, as the setup was general self-promoting feedback, sounding like I didn't get the job. Phone call with HR at the regional level was encouraging; make sure you seem like you want their positive feedback and they'll give more of it (and then use it for in-store interviewing...). Also, focus on transferable skills.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
How many Apple products do you own? (For those not interested in a technical position)
Famously competitive as always, my odds were better since I kept updating my resume whenever I was on the job search. They reached out to me first by email, I completed an application, and then had three rounds of interviews in total.

Question 1
Tell me about a time when you had to work with someone hesitant to learn.
Started with group interview and asked us all questions, only asked three questions and also showed us a little about genmojis and allowed us to create our own. if successful was a one to one interview with store manager again only asked three questions.
3 interviews that were all online and then an in person orientation where we learned more about the company and the values. After this point I became a temp 6 month contract
