Interviewed Jan 2008 in Lemont, IL (took a day)
A typical postdoc interview. A phone interview with the group leader first to get more detailed information on educational background and experiences. The on site interview is about 3/4 day. It consists of several one to one session with staff members and other postdocs in the group, and a presentation that is open to everbody in the laboratory. So there may be people outside the targeted research group at the presentation.
One to one session is about 30 to 45 mins for each person. The topics includes work arrrangement, lab environment/polices/rule, life style and interests, etc. Overall, the one to one sessions are informal and full of chances for interactive communications.
There are many cases in Argonne that the on site interview is spared when the background is a good match. This depends on the group leaders' personal preferences and style.
