Interviewed May 2009 in Franklin Lakes, NJ (took 2 days)
After submitting an application both online AND through a social contact who worked at BD I received a call from HR. I passed the HR telephone screening and was invited to an on campus interview at the Franklin Lakes, NJ set up by HR. I received a follow up e-mail from the dept. secretary with hiring manger and dept. manager copied. [ At last I had someone's name other than HR. ]
I live within a 30 minutes commute, so I arrived 10 min early for a 9 a.m. interview and filled out paperwork in their lobby. [ I requested paperwork in advance, but HR wouldn't send it in advance. ] Completed paperwork balancing clip board on an arm chair. HR was 40+ minutes late (don't know details, but he's no longer with BD) and I was left sitting with the receptionist, watching employees arrive. I would have liked to use this time to soak up some corporate atmosphere, but the reception area was stark with no view or reading material - just reception and security.
After a 45+ minute additional wait, HR finally greeted me with a perfunctory apology and I was escorted to a 1:1 HR re-screening / behavioral interview. HR kept interrupting my answers (stress test?) and came across as arrogant jerk with poor people skills. Interview schedule adhered fairly closely to 30 minute tag-team interviews. Next in line was hiring manager (very warm personality), then a senior staffer (also nice, but not very good at interviewing, so I led conversation), then two separate panel interviews (3 inter-dept peers and 3 other potential co-workers).
Somewhere during this I had to ask for a water break. Tag-team interviews with no one asking if there was anything they could get me - like a sip of water - after answering questions for 120 minutes ... [ Since then, I've started to bring a small bottle of water with me on interviews. ] Finally, last interview was dept manager. He and HR were the only folks that provided me with a business card - and, yes, I asked every person for their card. [ Having their card with name spelling and titles would facilitate sending a thank you note. ]
To get names I followed up with e-mail to dept. sect'y. that afternoon. Dept. sect'y walked me to the door and that was it. No commitment to time frame or next step in process. Over the course of the all-morning tag-team interview I had asked HR, the hiring manger, and the dept manager about time frame and next step. They were all elusive and non-committal. Didn't want to be too pushy, so I dropped it with the intent on following up by telephone or e-mail within a few days.
I send soft and hard copy thank you notes/letters to all and did follow up - on different days - with HR, dept. manager, and hiring manager. I was eventually advised by e-mail that they went with another candidate. Only later, through my social contact who worked at BD, did I find out that I was on their short list - #2 in fact - however, they went with the relative of a long-time employee. My contact said BD is quirky that way, they tend to be a bit homophobic. [ P.S. Guess how my contact get his job ? Yep, his dad recommended him. ] I'm curious to know how outsiders WITHOUT an inside contact have fared getting into BD.

Interviewed Nov 2009 (took 4 weeks)
The company has a very conservative culture. Speaking to current managers and executives, one gets the feeling that there is a lot of layers within the organization. Also, it is hard to grow within the same office, as people hang in there for a long time. Unless one is open to relocation and overseas stint, it would be tough to get promotion and growth in the company.

Interviewed Dec 2009 in Sandy, UT (took 2 days)
Quick half an hour interview, behavioral questions. It wasn't the right role for me (very technical - I was looking for something more business oriented). Didn't get the offer.
Heard nothing afterward, I believe a word to say NO would be appreciated.

Interviewed Dec 2009 (took 4+ months)
Attn Reviewer: Why is this entry not accepted - what needs to be changed?
My interview process consisted of 4 trips to the HQ location and entailed 18 interviews varying from one on one, team, case study and panel. After each meeting the feedback regarding the status was ambiguous in terms of next-steps and timing, (yes, I clearly asked). After 5 months, this experience has certainly hardened me and taught me about the reality of how this organization functions by 99% consensus and bureaucracy. At a unique level, BD remains to be an attractive organization to work for but has unfortunately lost credibility on how they orchestrate the interview process. A significant displeasure was the lack of communication I received, which after time turned into disrespect and became practically unethical. Let's remember that all people and teams operate differently, however their 2 key organizational values of “respect” and “doing what’s right” echo in my mind as hypocritical. It’s also important to remember that not all people and leaderships styles are the same inside of an organization’s culture. Unfortunately, the impression and perception of this organization has come true based on my experience.
Closure to this topic finally came after 141 calendar days via phone call from the hiring mgr. stating they went with their internal candidate which is an associate from another BD (non-U.S.) international location. Perhaps this situation was an anomaly due to economics and the job market. The talent management process at time of writing this is broken and is internally recognized by others in need of improvement. I hope this organization can fix it for their longevity and livelihood as arrogance and perceived complacency should not be any organization modus operandi. After 90 days of having the “chain pulled”, I realized this was a game. I however continued to invest my interest and desire to do well. Overall, I rank the interview process as “average”, but would rather use the description as “frustrating”. The experience of the process was not just “negative”, but unprofessional which made me ask myself, “if they are looking for someone to lead an area and demonstrate process improvements techniques, I’m not really sure if this environment would openly permit this based on how they operate”. Also, “can I perceivably thrive in a team or management style that cannot clearly communicate, also how would I be treated if I did get the role after this exhausting experience?” Throughout the process, it was never made clear from BD what the salary range was and description of the overall compensation package was. They knew what my experience rendered.
Some take aways:
1) What an incredible waste of human resources.
2) Poor external facing to public as organization gives impression of treating people as commodities and is clearly hypocritical to their values. Management needs to appreciate they are stewards of an organization. Not a good thing especially in this economy (2009).
3) Disappointed, as was eager to make positive difference. Just a reminder how not treat people during recruiting process. First impressions mean a lot.
4) BD has serious talent management/sourcing problem and process is disjointed between HR and hiring functions.
5) An experience I will not forget for a while, however, sense of humor and personal ethics remain strong.
6) Not jaded, but smarter.
Best of luck!

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Sumter, SC (took a day)
Had an initial phone interview that went well, about 25 min. Was called back for an on-site interview for the next week. Lasted about 6 hrs. First hour was filling out paperwork then an hour for a plant tour. Nice, clean, big facility. Then I spoke with the hiring manager and a dept manger. The questions were typical behavior type questions like "Describe a time you had an employee that wasn't performing as expected, how did you deal with that". They are very focused on leadership training. Particularly on training subordinates and getting them ready for promotion. This topic was brought up numerous times. After that I spoke with 2 supervisors. Same type questions. Then went to lunch. Talked with 2 other managers/supervisors after lunch. Overall, the people are nice and they give you the opportunity to speak. They care about what they are doing and they understand that they have to make a quality product at a low price. Very impressive organization.
