Interviewed Aug 2011 in Rochester, NY (took a day)
The interview was astonishingly unprofessional. The woman who interviewed me was exceedingly vapid and giggly and it was hard to keep her on topic, she seemed to want to talk about my school experiences in Media. I tried hard to steer discussions about TV technology into things relevant to the job, such as leadership and making plans but without much success.
To make matters worse I don't think they even took my application at all seriously, only after an hour or so of vacuous questions did she think it might be worth mentioning that not only was the company not interested in paying me the (relatively low) amount that I had asked, they were not even willing to pay me anywhere near the bare-minimum amount I had explicitly indicated that I was willing to take the position for! They wanted to pay me 50 cents more than minimum wage for a management job! I have five years of relevant experience!
They also indicated that the job required hours dramatically different from what I had indicated that I could work. I terminated the interview as politely as I could and hinted that I was not pleased that I had driven a half-hour to this location only to have my time wasted; the hint seemed to sail right over her head.
When I indicated that I could not accept the offer she tried to interest me in a part-time minimum wage job as a cashier. I was very insulted and told her that I was doing a better job at the moment at one of her competitors, she then made the suggestion that I could take this job and continue my existing job part-time. In addition to being simply bizarre the suggestion was flagrantly unethical and asked me to commit an obvious conflict of interest. This raises all kinds of disturbing questions about the ethical standards of the company and makes me wonder if they care at all about their associates or customers.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
Offer made was not at all attractive:
Insultingly low offer of pay, 25% less than what I had offered as bare minimum acceptable pay.
Asked to agree to hours I had explicitly indicated prior to interview I could not work.
Description of job made by interviewer materially differed from description posted in taleo.
Unprofessional conduct of the interviewer turned me off of working with the company.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in San Francisco, CA (took 2 weeks)
First contacted via e-mail by Human Resource recruiter to set up phone interview. General questions asked about background, work experience, and interest in position. After initial phone screen, was asked to meet with Director for 1:1 interview. More in-depth questions asked about work experience and interest in company. Overall, had a positive impression about the company as they are very organized about interview dates and application process, and provided quick and informative feedback.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Friendswood, TX (took 1 week)
I was recruited by Gap and applied to work at The Gap on-line but never received a call back. After checking in at the store. The manager asked that I be patient and if she calls me, I'll know that I cleared the application process. However, she never called because they apparently decided not to hire according to their budget, the sales and the recent remodeling. I did, however, receive an e-mail from Gap Inc's system about Banana Republic's recruiting within the same mall I'd applied for Gap employment. I'd forgotten about the submission, which was very simple since all I needed to do was take another personality test and answer questions about my Government (welfare, veteran, disabled, etc) status. I believe it'd been about 2 weeks since I submitted the app when I received a call back. The first question the assistant manager asked is whether i was seeking seasonal or permanent employment. It was later explained that they do not hire summer seasonal employees. Whew! Glad I'd passed that screening. I wasn't expecting a group interview; the AM made it seem as though they'd taken a particular interest in interviewing me personally. Nevertheless, reading and working through the questions on this site thoroughly prepared me for the interview. I wrote down answers to the questions that I saw on the site and was very prepared because I'd processed the answers and could fluidly explain my answer. I was smoothest speaking interviewee. However, I was also the most overdressed. They want you to look sleek but not stuffy. They definitely appreciated my professionalism but, recommend that employees fit into one of the rooms in the store and dress in season, wear no hosiery, flip flops, wild hair colors and other than that the dress code is quite flexible. The Manager was dressed to the T from fingernails to earrings, she was very well accessorized and energized. She had a great personality and was looking for an employee that could complement that but, ofcourse not take her place as company cheerleader. She'e be hard to top anyway. They value maturity and a few people in the group seemed to lack that. BR has mature clientele and they seek mature, helpful and attentive employees. The manager also seemed to value personality and light-heartedness. "We're not saving lives here guys; we're selling clothes. So, we should be able to have fun and lighten up a bit!" Overall, the group interview went well and I feel very confident about receiving a call back. The interview took place on a Thursday and the Manager promised to call us by Monday to schedule a second interview, although Monday's a federal holiday. Ofcourse, the mall is open.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Austin, TX (took 4 days)
I came into the store on a Friday to apply at about noon. I asked one of the cashiers if they had any open positions and she said yes, they did, but they only accepted applications online. She gave me a card that had all the information I needed to apply on it. She was very friendly and asked me if I wanted to meet the manager anyways, and I accepted. The manager was extremely nice and courteous and scheduled me to come in for an interview the following Tuesday.
The interview was a 1:1 with the manager that I had met. It was great because she encouraged me to ask questions and never made me feel like I was asking the wrong ones. I was very nervous, not having worked in a retail position before, but she made it extremely easy to be myself in my interview. She offered me the position at the interview and set up a date for me to come to orientation.

Negotiation Details
Being my first retail job, I didn't really negotiate my starting rate, but she assured me that there was plenty of room for growth and upward mobility if I proved myself capable.

Interviewed Jul 2010 in New York, NY (took 5 days)
I came in for a one on one interview with the hiring manager. It took about a half hour. She asked me questions such as "Why do you want to work here?" and "What does great customer service mean to you?" pretty much questions I have been asked when applying to other positions. When we were done she asked me if I had any questions for her. I asked her about the dress code (which has since changed) and she proceded to tell me that, and all the other requirements for the position I was applying to. I felt pretty confident at the end of the interview but got a little nervous when I didn't get a call the next day. My interview was on a Tuesday, and I received a phone call Friday afternoon telling me I was hired. Orientation took place the following Thursday.

Interviewed Jun 2011 (took a day)
I was interviewed by two people. I went into the store (which I absolutely LOVE because it shows quality), notified the person (who remembered me when I called two days later) behind the counter (which was kinda hard to find), met with the interviewer, and stepped outside the store into the mall to have my interview. She asked the usual interview questions (why do you want to work here, how would you respond to a certain situation, availability, etc) and I was prepared for most of them (a product of staying up past 2 the night before studying up on the company) but there was one question that I was stumped on: who are the brands we would consider competition? I could only know one store for sure, but she wanted more, so I was searching like crazy. I could only think up of about 5 and said I don't really know any more. I was kinda intimidated (which I hid behind a big smile) because I couldn't really tell if the interviewer cared about what my answers were. I got interviewed shortly after by another person and asked me the usual personal questions about myself. She complimented my attitude. Both interviewers asked about what kind of position I would like (sales) and how I would be able to work in that position. Overall, the interviews were good. I was less nervous than I thought I would be and it was enjoyable. We laughed a lot.
