Interviewed Jan 2012 in Dayton, OH (took a day)
I received a call from a recruiter telling me Bankers was looking to hire me for one of three positions, based on my preference. I'd read the reviews, I was skeptical, but I went anyways (hey, no job, nothing happening on a Tuesday afternoon - why not?).
Prior to the presentation I was given a packet of information including the job description. Only the sales position was included, so I had the nerve to ask about the financial adviser and management positions before the 75 minute sales pitch. I was told it would be covered during the presentation.
The next 75 minutes were a blur of "sell for us, it'll make you feel good, we help people!" I think "unlimited" and "the sky's the limit" was mentioned 20 times each. That's quite a bit for a presentation. The word "Integrity" was also used numerous times; more on that in a moment.
The rep spun his wheels telling us how good it makes you feel to "help" people. He referenced one of the excerpts from a hand out about a sales agent that, "was touched delivering the death check to a client's family, knowing I was able to help." Our rep had similar experiences, apparently. He guarantees that feeling is what makes it all worthwhile, not the money to be made. But there's unlimited money to be made, the sky's the limit!
The rep also has a very jaded view of how things work. That, or he was trying to blow smoke up our asses about how great their product is. I've worked medical billing before and recognize Bankers as not being the greatest Medicare supplement. He swore they always paid, on time, with no hassle.
After stomaching the garbage session for 75 minutes, I finally asked, "Is Sales the only entry-level position?" The answer was of course, everything goes through Sales. If you want to move up, you have to be a Sales Agent. I then asked, "Why would the recruiter tell me that a Financial Adviser and Management position was available initially?" The rep gave me a dirty look before claiming he has nothing to do with recruitment. Integrity is important, at Bankers. I guess ignorance is, too.
Save your time and don't bother with Bankers unless you want a 100% commission based, entry level position. The best part is you have to spend $325 before they'll consider hiring you - $250 for the insurance broker study materials/exam + $75 for the fingerprinting and background check at the test center.
