Interviewed Apr 2010 in Miami, FL (took 1 week)
Nothing imposing, I had an interview with one of the managers, who asked me a lot of questions about my job history, and was particularly interested in my experience of theft on the job, and how I dealt with someone, a customer or employee stealing items from my last job. He liked the fact that I had a history of taking care of books, knowing a little of ISBN, which is the like an I.D. number on books. He also asked about how I handled a conflict at work, and was interested in knowing about customer service experience, in person, or on the phone. It went pretty well, it had a casual feel to it, but still professional. It was about half an hour.

Interviewed Dec 2009 in Aventura, FL (took a day)
Add Barnes & Noble to the list of companies lacking in the common courtesy of letting the applicant know the decision - obviously not an offer.
The interview was standard for a retail store. A group of us sat around a table while the store manager and the cafe manager asked questions about how we deal with rudeness, how we would make recommendations to a customer etc. We spent about two hours in the room.
When it was over, the store manager, clearly an amateur, told us not to take it personally if we were not contacted. You know what, I do take it personally. A form email acknowledging that we took the time to interview and regretfully declining takes no more than 2 minutes out of the day and it's bad form for any company not to follow up like that, but particularly for a retail company. You see, I am also a customer and while I understand that they may not want me to work there, I will choose to buy elsewhere rather than deal with the lack of common courtesy. Very unprofessional.
