Business Office Associate Interview (Positive Experience; Difficult Interview)
I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at CarMax in February 2014.
Interview Details – Was contacted one week after submitting online application. Initial contact was friendly and brief - the woman I spoke with set up a next-day phone interview with me. After completing the phone interview, I was told that I would be contacted within a week if they wanted to continue on with the process. I was contacted by the same woman two days later and asked to come in for an in-store interview (scheduled for after the weekend). The in-store interview was about 2 hours, half of which was spent waiting for interviewers. It started with a brief online interview questionnaire asking simple questions about my work/life history (drug use, jobs omitted on application, history of theft?). I was interviewed, first, by a gentleman from a different department (standard interview questions, What do you know about CarMax? along with incident questions). I was then interviewed by a couple of managers (many of the same questions) and told they would be in contact with me within the next couple of weeks. I was contacted the next day and scheduled to come back in for a follow-up interview (scheduled for next week). All staff members I encountered were friendly and hospitable.
Interview Question – No unexpected, difficult questions. However, when being asked "incident questions", like 'Tell me about a time when you had to make a difficult decision in a quick manner...', they are looking for specific answers, nothing generalized. Answer Question
Business Office Manager In Training Interview (Positive Experience; Difficult Interview)
I applied through an employee referral and interviewed at CarMax.
Interview Details – Very long detailed process. First with a Recruiter then interviews with store management then regional manager. All after very thourough online screening process.
Interview Question – Share an experience where you weren't successful Answer Question
Negotiation Details – Simple you accepted the offer or not
PT Customer Service Interview (Negative Experience; Easy Interview)
I applied online and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at CarMax in February 2014.
Interview Details – You first take a test and if you pass that you move into a small room and meet with HR. They ask you about 30 questions and write down all of your answers. After that I met with 2 managers who asked me 30 different questions. All in all I was there for 3hrs. They said they would let me know either way which they did not and I found so rude. Pay is low about 11hr but you can wear jeans to work.
Interview Question – No questions were hard Answer Question
Business Office Associate Interview (Neutral Experience; Easy Interview)

Interview Details – Call back next day for a phone interview
Reason for Declining – Not enough money
Sales Consultant Interview (Positive Experience; Difficult Interview)
I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at CarMax in January 2013.
Interview Details – Internet application took 3 hours, received a phone interview a week later, asked to come in for an interview, had three separate interviews and called back for one last interview with the Manager and then offered the job.
Interview Question – Had to role play selling a car without any prior experience or training Answer Question
Negotiation Details – Commission only, hourly rate while training. Training process typically takes 6 weeks.
Strategy Analyst Interview (Neutral Experience; Difficult Interview)
I applied through college or university and the process took 5 days - interviewed at CarMax in February 2014.
Interview Details – I applied through on campus recruiting at the University of Illinois. I applied on January 9th. I heard back in Mid February. I was asked to complete a math questionaire. Then I had a phone interview. The phone interview was behavioral at first, but then moved into a case interview. They have invited me to the next round of interviews at their home office. But I think I will be declining
Interview Question – Phone interview case question: Expected payout problem. It involved two possible winners to an American Idol competition. There are two possible bets. You can bet on Jordan for $5 and potentially win $14 (net profit $9). Or you can bet on Chris for $8 and potentially win $13 dollars (net profit $5). The questions revolve around probability of each one winning. Depending on the probability of one winning there is a bet that will be most profitable. The case also adds two other 'bets' in addition to the two listed above. You can either choose not to bet or you can bet on both of them. Answer Question
Business Office Associate Interview (Positive Experience; Average Interview)
I applied online and the process took 2 days - interviewed at CarMax in February 2014.
Interview Details – First I had my phone interview, which were pretty basic questions. Asking a lot abut your past work experience. After my phone interview they wanted to schedule a face to face interview. When you get there, they make you sit in this office on a computer and answering questions online asking if you have ever done drugs, have you stolen anything, etc. That takes about 10-15 minutes. After that, someone will interview you, and be prepared for a lot of questions. There were a lot of questions like "Tell me about a time where..." After my first interview they told me they want a second interview with a different person. So about 10 minutes later I was interviewed again by the guy who did my phone interview. Again, asking more questions about situations that you have been in, how did you solve this problem, tell me about a time where you did this...etc. After that interview I was pretty much offered the job right there and then! Starting pay is $10 an hour.
Interview Question – A lot of questions starting off as "Tell me about a time when..." Answer Question
Sales Consultant Interview (Neutral Experience; Average Interview)
I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at CarMax in February 2014.
Interview Details – Applied online, got a phone call a few days later. Had a phone interview and at the end was scheduled for an in person interview. You will then get an email with information about the interview and what should be expected. It's actually very helpful information. The interview consists of talking with a few different managers. If you make it through all the managers, about 3+ hours later, you will get a job offer on the spot. If you did not get an offer, you did not get the job. Unfortunately, I feel as if the last manager who interviewed me was ignoring me right off the bat. During my answers, he was talking to other employees from across the room. I feel as if I was disregarded before I even answered the questions. I didn't get the job, but I truly feel it was unfair. I don't think it is like this everywhere, as most of the managers and employees seemed really nice, but it just so happened that the last person to interview me didn't seem like he was in the mood to listen to anything I had to say.
Interview Question – Nothing was really all that difficult, but the most unexpected was having to explain the last "drug" I used, when, where, and why... Answer Question
Associate Interview (Positive Experience; Average Interview)

Interview Question – Tell me about a time you had to deal with an angry customer, tell me about a time that you went above and beyond for a customer View Answer
Negotiation Details – Offered an hourly rate. Not much room for negotiation but was told that there would be annual increases and opportunity for advancement
Sales Consultant Interview (Positive Experience; Average Interview)
I applied online and the process took 5 days - interviewed at CarMax in January 2010.
Interview Details – Applied online and got a phone interview the next day. Within a week I had an in person interview at one of their stores. Interviewed with two sales managers and the store manager that same day and got offered the position. Got drug tested immediately and filled out all paperwork the same day. Was working with them within five days
