Interviewed Oct 2009 in Peoria, IL (took a day)
Met with two different recruiters from Cat, each individually. They asked questions, mostly behavioral-based about my past and some questions about my resume and why I wanted to work for Caterpillar. I was nervous, but looking back it was a pretty easy interview. They were friendly and it was over before I new it.

Interviewed Sep 2011 (took a day)
Was one hour long, and consisted of two 1:1, 30 minute sessions. There were two interviewers ( one for each session). They asked your typical STAR questions. They were very professional, but you could tell they were on a tight time restraint to ask all of the questions. My advice would be to research common STAR questions and have responses ready to go.

Interviewed Oct 2010 (took a day)
I had 2 separate interviews. The first interview was with the hiring supervisor and the second interview as with the hiring manager. In both cases, I was asked why I was interested in the job, what experience I could bring and my strengths/weaknesses. The hiring supervisor also questioned me about my willingness to travel and whether I had travelled internationally in previous jobs. In addition to the above questions, the hiring manager explained the group's training strategy and how I would fit into that strategy if I was offered and accepted the position.
I was interviewing as an existing employee for a lateral move. For new hires, I would offer the following advice. If you are an entry level applicant, be prepared to give an impromptu presentation on your resume. The purpose is to evaluate your communication skills. You will be asked situational questions and must draw upon your acedemic experience to answer as best as you can. Also be prepared to explain how you would solve a particular issue related to your field. The company is testing your problem solving abilities. New hires are typically interviewed by at least 3 people who meet afterwards to discuss the interviews and decide if you should be hired. If you are a mid-level applicant, be prepared to also answer situational questions but draw upon your professional experience to answer the questions. Your resume should highlight your professional accomplishments and any continuing education.
Willingness to relocate is a definate PLUS with this company.

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Peoria, IL (took a day)
I talked to a recruiter at a career fair, and received an email inviting me to interview that night. I was interviewed by three different people for a half hour each. The interview was a series of behavioral questions (name a time when... ect). They were friendly, but the interview was on a tight schedule.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in Champaign, IL (took 2 weeks)
The office administrator called and e-mailed me after I applied for the position. She was very easy to talk to and let me pick when the time of the interview. The actual interview last a little over an hour. It consisted of many behavioral questions. Such as, "name a time you used a concept you learned in the classroom and later applied it to solve a problem in real life. I wish there were more technical questions about engineering fundamentals. One of the two interviewers asked a couple quick technical questions at the very end but it maybe accounted for 5% of the interview. Overall, the interviewers were very respectful and attentive.

I was not able to negotiate, and I would not recommend attempting it. The per hour compensation is the same for all interns, and do not seem them bending it for anyone.

Interviewed Jul 2011 in Peoria, IL (took a day)
I interviewed with the hiring manager and two other managers working in different groups. All three interviews had the same format with STAR questions. There 1:1 interview in the morning followed by my 25 minutes presentation after lunch. I am still waiting for their final decision. I did follow up last week with the hiring manager, but I didnot get his response. I will try to call him this week.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in East Peoria, IL (took a day)
I despise the CAT interview process. They require you to go out to dinner the night before the interview to grill you about your personal life ad nauseam. I clearly marked on the online application that I could not do greater than 25% travel, and they informed me AT THE PLANT on the day of the interview that the actual travel requirement for the job is 50%. Eat dirt.

Interviewed Mar 2011 in Lafayette, IN (took 2 days)
There was an initial telephone interview. This was followed by another more technical phone interview with two specialists. This was then followed by an invitation to the facilities, dinner and several interviews.
There were specific interview questions designed to probe people skills and abilities. The people were very nice, and the process was organised and the people there seemed very content to work there. Overall a very pleasant experience.
