Interviewed May 2009 in Oakbrook Terrace, IL (took a day)
I found this job through a staffing agency, which was interested in filling a Sales associates job in this company. After a couple over the phone and in person interviews with the staffing company they decided to put me through one of the managers for an on-site interview. When I arrived for the interview they described the job, told me that there were many opportunities for advancement, but that their average associate would typically work for about 50 hrs a week.

Interviewed May 2009 in Reston, VA (took 2 weeks)
I first heard of CBeyond through a recruiter who told me that it was a new communications company with a young and aggressive work force. I was excited because as a recent grad It sounded like something I would be interested in. I had a telephone interview with the recruiter to gauge my interest in sales and was passed to the hiring manager. The office is located in a nice building and has only been open since january. I was told that because of this there was a lot of opportunity for growth. My interview was at 4:30 and I had to fight DC traffic to make it there at 4:10. As soon as I arrived I noticed that someone else was being interviewed. The interview lasted a long time and I didnt get interviewed till 5. I was not happy because the recruiter had stressed that I be on time and I felt that was a bit unprofessional on their part. Once my interview started I was asked the basic sales questions, for example.. Why sales? What makes you motivated? and so on. I could tell the manager was extremely impressed with my prior sales experience. I asked a lot of in depth questions to find out more about the job and discovered it was a straight door to door sales job. I did not like they did not give you a car allowance and they paid for your gas based on appointments. The next step was a ride a long with reps. It was exactly what I thought, going door to door saying anything to open up new business. The hours were crazy. First you had to be at the office by 7:30 for training/meetings then out in the field at 10, return to the office at 5:30 to report your sales then go home. I didn't get home till about 7. After I evaluated the hours, pay, and type of work I decided this was not a fit for me.

Interviewed Sep 2008 in Santa Clara, CA (took 2 weeks)
The real Cbeyond interview has 3 parts, although you're only told about the first two.
First, you get a one-on-one interview with their hiring manager. If your recruiter is any good, they will basically couch you through exactly what to say. It's a pretty standard interview, and basically if you are an outgoing person, they'll move you on. Because the turnover rate is so high, they'll hire pretty much anybody as long as you're not hesitant and shy. The hiring manager will make the job sound WAY better than it actually is, and tell you that it's easy, and that you will make a lot more than what is actually average for the first year, and not tell you specifics like how a few thousand dollars of the proposed "salary" is actually gas reimbursement (which doesn't even nearly cover what you'll spend). If you actually really want this job, then be proactive and ask to move forward.
The second step is an all-day field ride with a certified employee. Talk to everyone you see in the office and be super friendly, and then build a lot of rapport with the person you're riding with. Also, volunteer to start cold-calling during the field ride. As long as you are friendly, outgoing, and proactive, you'll get an offer.
This experience can vary, depending on who you're riding with. One time a guy on my team had a field ride near the last day of the month. Halfway through, he figured she was hampering him and had no chance of the job anyway, so he dumped at a gas station 40 miles away from the office and told her to find her own way back. On the other hand my field ride was really pleasant--he was nursing a hangover from the night before, so we only hit less than 30 doors in this beautiful coastal town by Santa Cruz, and we ended up spending over an hour eating pizza. Then he told me to say we actually hit the required 50 doors, and he gave me a great recommendation.
After this step, you'll get the job offer, but you're actually not done yet. After you're hired, you start a week-long on-site crash course into telecom sales, no experience necessary. On the fourth day, you head out to your territory for the first time, and during that day your new manager will cold call with you for about an hour. Even though they never tell you, THIS is actually the final interview, where they see if you can cut it or not in the field. They WILL fire you the fourth day on the job if you can't cold call. If you pass this, then you get sent for the one week of actual training at HQ in Atlanta.
Honestly, the job kinda sucks, and I deeply regret turning down better offers because I was lured in by the "fun" youth culture they presented. But if you really just want a job, just be outgoing and you're hired because they really don't care about past experience or education when hiring.

The job offer is set in stone. Everyone begins with the same salary, and it's posted on the wall.
That said, they really mislead you when they quote a "71,000" a year salary. This is under the assumption that you'll hit your quota every month, including when it becomes 6 deals a month every month for the second half of the first year. Many people go their first months without selling a deal, and the average number of deals a month for a long-time employee is 4. If you sell 5 you get to spin a wheel and win a price, so you can see how big a deal selling 6 deals a month is. This also makes a HUGE difference because your commission is on a gradated scale--you'll earn double PER deal if you sell 6 of the same deals than if you sell 3. Also, they include a grossly inflated gas reimbursement amount into that salary figure, when A) you're not going to get that much and B) It's gas reimbursement so it's money you already spent, not salary.
