Interviewed Dec 2010 in Tampa, FL (took a day)
Applied online then received a call from district manager who wanted to meet for an informal interview. Standard interview questions lasting about an hour. The manager told me that he would request that other Cengage managers would like to speak with me and he would be in touch. I never heard a word and even followed up with an email and sent a thank you note.

Interviewed Dec 2010 in Boston, MA (took a day)
I interview with 4 people two months after applying online. Interview lasted 4hrs. Was asked to provide sample edit; then asked to complete second phase of online app. Kept in good contact with one woman. Process was drawn out; was misled about position. Ask HR about payscale for your position.

Reason for Declining
Got offer almost 8 weeks after interview. Offer was for a lower position and salary. I was offended for being mislead. It would have been professional of the company to let me know that the open position had changed so I wouldn't waste my time on a position that did not interested me. I'm lucky to have a job, so I didn't have to settle for less.

Interviewed Dec 2010 (took 3 weeks)
Cengage Learning take a long time over their interview process. They are very thorough, which adds confidence as it is certain that they know the person is right for the role. The interview was a two person panel, where most of the questions were about my experiences, and the position itself was hardly touched upon (if at all). I came out not knowing anything new about the position.

Interviewed Jul 2010 in Belmont, CA (took a day)
I initially received a phone screen where the basic questions were asked. After the phone screen with HR, an in person interview was set up with the marketing team. I met with the Marketing Director and Marketing Managers. All of the office staff seemed very friendly, smart and nice.

Interviewed May 2010 (took 2+ weeks)
very slow, multiple interviews, no offer. They will make you drive to their office many many times, they will conduct background check, call your references and in the end what I saw - they reposted the job again. they startet the hiring process all over again. 1 month later I received a rejection letter.

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 6 days)
Had to interview with over 5 different people, many of with whom I already had a working relationship. Each interview lasted an hour or so, and the questions were very similar for each - "why do you want this position? What can you bring to this position? Why should we hire you?" The interview process was dragged out for so many days that I finally just accepted another offer.

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 6 weeks)
I applied for a sales position and did not hear from Cengage. About three weeks later I got a call and had a pre-screen phone interview. After fifteen years of successful selling at a large publishing house, I was then asked to do a campus project. I had to go on a college campus and do a project. I was a bit surprised at this since I had not even had a face to face interview. I did the project and was quite successful at talking to the campus bookstore manager and a good number of professors. This was 3 days before Christmas.
I then was asked to travel 1.5 hours for the face to face interview. It was canceled due to snow. The interview was rescheduled closer to my home. I was interviewed over lunch for about an hour and forty five minutes. At the end of the interview I asked what the salary range was. I was asked what I was looking for. I suspect that they were look to pay me what they would someone coming out of college. I was not hired.

Interviewed Aug 2009 in Belmont, CA (took 3 days)
Got this interview through an referral of someone I met. Talked via phone and in-person with about 7-8 people. Most of the interviewers asked general questions and some were not prepared. Most of it seemed like a "does she fit" interview. Was not offered the job, I suspect because of my salary requirements. Salaries in the publishing industry are low.
General sense is that Cengage is trying to change, become more media savvy, but has a lot of baggage.
