Interviewed Jun 2009 in Mountain View, CA (took 3 weeks)
First had a phone interview with an engineer in Colorado. Asked how I would implement a concurrent hash map, Java coding, JVM GC etc. Then interview with Architect was silly. Three more engineers, then VP of Engineering and Founder CTO. Loved the company vision, passion and energy of the CTO. Felt very happy about hearing the higher purpose of the company directly from the founder.
The whole process was very unpredictable - didn't have a clue, but a recruiter called me to let me know I made it. Was happy, but the salary/comp negotiation was a big turn-off.

Negotiation Details
Lots of discussions about stock options, base compensation. Had to extract every bit of comp.
Many promises about how the company was growing, how I could become a star or manager.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Mountain View, CA (took 5 months)
I went through the technical phone interview where they asked mostly Java knowledge questions, and then a small coding question.
Then I was invited onsite where I was interviewed by 4 senior engineers. They asked about my experience, and also algorithm questions - linked list, designing a system, concurrency, immutability, priority queues, etc.
All of them seemed to like my answers, and so I was invited for the next stage - meeting with the Senior Director, Development and VP of Technology. The Senior Director of Development was not very nice. He was doubting and rejecting my every answer, which I considered to be rude. I was "left with a bitter taste in my mouth" after that interview. A week later I received a rejection email. I just don't understand why they don't trust their senior developers who interviewed and liked me, and why 1 person decides whether to hire or not.

Interviewed Mar 2011 (took 2 months)
The process started with a third party/independent recruiter that sought me out for the job. This team is small and a little "green". Not the most well versed team and not very helpful throughout the interview process. They claim to be experts with Clearwell but often found that they forgot many pitfalls with each person in the interview process and questions that they should have prepared me for.
After clearing the recruiter screening you move onto the hiring manager. If that is successful then you move onto the 2nd level manager. This is a very small company so they have varied degrees of skill and background. It seems clear they are looking for individuals who are well versed in eDiscovery. The final interview will be a test of your knowledge of the eDiscovery and EDRM model, along with competitors in each step.
They come across a bit arrogant. Considering they seems to be looking for well experienced folks in the eDiscovery space, not much of the upper management or VP of sales have deep experience in the space itself. Overall they have a good reputation, but seem a bit arrogant. Often for the phone interviews they were late or I had to call them to see if they forgot about the interview.

Interviewed Nov 2010 in Mountain View, CA (took 2 weeks)
I received an email from the company recruiter about the job opening and was asked if I was interested. I did express interest, but did not hear again from the recruiter for about a month. After the initial phone screen with the recruiter, I was sent a "Q&A" about my technical skills I have or don't have for the position. My group/panel of interviewers were set up for two weeks after the phone screen. The first interview was a 1:1 with an SD. I must not have been a good fit, because he said there were some "scheduling conflicts" and that they would not be able to continue with the rest of the interviews that day. I was told that I would be contacted for a reschedule, but of course I did not hear from the company again. I know not to pursue the opportunity further.

Interviewed Nov 2010 in Mountain View, CA (took 2+ weeks)
After initial phone screening (it took almost 2 weeks of going back and forth e-mails with intermittent no response for days to arrange this, same with 1:1 interview), I was called on site. Office and people seemed nice.
Luckily for me their recruiter had a discussion regarding compensation prospects right at the beginning.and when he insisted on what I am making, from his expressions/body language it seemed like they would not be able to match it or come even close to it. Agree with other poster's advice.
" in order to attract top talent, it is insufficient to claim to be a great place to work. You need to put something material forward. If you are not willing to do this, please save yourself and candidates some time by disclosing that your compensation package is mediocre."

Interviewed Sep 2010 in Mountain View, CA (took 3 days)
I have applied online and had a phone screening. It was simple, typical OOP, DB, indexing questions. The day after, I was invited for an on-site interview. I met 6-7 people, including HR, a couple of engineers, a principal engineer. They asked expected questions about Java, OO, software design etc. After the interview, I was contacted by and had a scheduled interview with CEO. It seems a good environment but they hiring procedure was not organized, I assume they don't know what they need precisely. The benefit package is really humble for this kind of corporation.

Interviewed Jul 2010 in Mountain View, CA (took 3 weeks)
The process consisted of a phone screen, 2 separate onsite visits consisting of interviews with engineers, and 1 final visit to interview with CTO and CEO. The technical interviews were okay, but I don't get why a 100+ person company still needs to have every candidate screened by the CEO - ever heard of delegating tasks and trusting the opinions of your coworkers?
Anyway, before I left the final interview their recruiter finally had a concrete discussion with me regarding compensation prospects with me, and it turned out they'd have a hard time even matching my current salary. The equity award would also be stingy. Wait a minute - couldn't you have saved me time by disclosing this situation earlier on? Well, later on he called me and said they would not be moving forward with an offer at all, partly due to inability to match my salary expectations - even though everyone I talked to did like me.
Here's some advice - in order to attract top talent, it is insufficient to claim to be a great place to work. You need to put something material forward. If you are not willing to do this, please save yourself and candidates some time by disclosing that your compensation package is mediocre.

Interviewed Nov 2009 in Mountain View, CA (took 2 weeks)
The interview process at Clearwell was an interesting experience. A recruiter set up a call, after a 15 minute pitch of what a great company clearwell was. Then, two engineers, one an architect, and another a senior software engineer talked to me on the phone. That part of the conversation was terrible for me. A lot of silly programming questions that I don't have on the tip of my hand. I had to say that I'm a quick learner and I usually google and find the best design pattern for coding.
I was surprised to get a call for a face to face interview. I must have talked to a lot of folks including the hiring manager, VP of engineering and the CTO. I was given an offer but felt that the options were too low, there was no bonus, no profit sharing and in general a five year old company stingy on spending for quality engineers.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
I declined the offer as it seemed like there were so many companies with a better fit for my talents. The whole process was low-balling my real capabilities and I didn't want to join and prove to a bunch of average talent that I can do better than them.

Interviewed Mar 2010 (took 2+ weeks)
A so called Senior software engineer and an Architect interviewed me for this position.
I really wondered if they were real computer science engineers or just took some Java courses to start programming. I was surprised to see them still employed in the current economic condition!
Anyway.. they both did not know even the basics of Java. They never heard about the term Immutable Object in Java!!
Interview Questions
Difference between Java, C, and C++
How does wait/notify work? < This guy did not even know these methods are from Object class>
Reason for Declining
Crappy engineers with below par talent.
