    After the Interview Let candidates know - A pet peeve of many job seekers is that they are left hanging after an interview, or they are promised follow-up that never comes. If the candidate is a good fit, be clear about what the next steps will be. And if the candidate is not a good fit, make the call as soon as possible out of courtesy. Compare notes and reach consensus - The post-interview evaluation is the time to compare notes and advance the hiring decision. Each interviewer should be prepared to back up remarks and recommendations with specific examples and notes from the interview. Deepen the questions as you narrow the field - Subsequent interviews with finalists are valuable opportunities to learn more about them. Consider recreating a real business challenge the individual would be facing.

    I had a phone screen, than a second interview with two individuals over the phone who called me 15 minutes late, did not apologize, were completely unprepared (i.e. didn't know what to ask me), and spoke incoherent English. That interview should have raised red flags...but I was willing to give it a chance. In any case, following this interview they asked me to submit a writing sample the same day in response to a prompt that I basically came up with during the interview. I thought this was inconsiderate because it was a Friday night and they wouldn't take no for an answer. They liked my writing sample and asked me to come in for an in-person interview with several members of the client team (non-Cognizant folks) I would be working with - these went really well. Following this interview I emailed Cognizant and thanked them. They then asked me to share with them the specific questions I was asked by the client during the interview. I thought that was highly unprofessional, if not shady to put someone who still is not your employee in that position. In any case I submitted several follow-up emails to both the hiring manager and another HR individual and never heard back.

    I applied through Indeed.com or Monster.com. I received a phone screening. Next I received a phone interview. Next, I was advised I would be contacted to set up an in-person interview. I received instructions on how to enter the building. At the interview, I was given a company overview, the partnership engagement description, when the expected start date is, when I should have a decision, a tactical look at the first few weeks once hired, and the hours of operation. We did not talk salary, which I feel is completely appropriate since they have a recruiter. That allowed us to have an extremely conversational interview, which appeared to be very open and honest. I was truly impressed.

    The entire process took at least 3 months. I had several phone interviews with the hiring manager and made it all the way to the final round. As a tenured recruiting professional, I try to be respectful of my candidate's time and efforts particularly when they get to the final stages. That said, when I followed up with the hiring manager in regards to status, I received no response, no feedback, no longer being considered or otherwise. For a recruiting organization that prides itself on hiring the best, the candidate experience first hand was terrible. Be courteous and respectful of your candidates. Give them the decency to let them know they are no longer being considered. A simple thanks but no thanks email will do. This will definitely help in your candidate experience initiatives.
