Interviewed Sep 2011 in Cold Spring Harbor, NY (took 4+ weeks)
I found the position posted online and applied for it in the middle of August, by early September I had been contact by HR for an interview (which took place mid September). I was vaguely familiar with the campus as I had gone to the hatchery as an elementary school student and I grew up in the area. I was impressed with the grounds and the lay out, absolutely stunning.
I interviewed with 3 people: the director of HR, the comptroller (who is also the VP of finance) and the assistant comptroller. My interview began with the director of HR who explained the position in detail and reviewed salary/benefits offered, which are exceptional. We discussed my history and what I was seeking. We then walked to the accounting/legal building where I continued the interview with the comptroller and the assistant comptroller (both separate interviews). The comptroller again reviewed the position and its requirements, explaining in a little more detail the nature of the labs work and what exactly the position would encompass. After meeting with her I was handed over to the assistant comptroller, again we reviewed basics of the position and he went into the specifics of what would be expected. I was told by all that there was extensive room for growth and that the company in general is much like a family, something I felt immediately. I was absolutely impressed with each person who interviewed me, I felt comfortable and welcomed by everyone.
After the interview I was told I would be contacted if I got the position or not and that I would hear by the following Thursday (7 days), Friday came and I had no answer so I eagerly called HR to see if they had received my thank you letters and to see if there was any additional information I could provide, I was told then that I would be contacted by the end of the day regarding the position. The end of the day came and went and I hadn’t heard from them so by the following Wednesday (13 days) I called again to see if a decision had been made and I was told they had gone with another candidate. I would have liked to have been notified as I was told I would have been.
If given the chance to interview for another position I would absolutely jump at the opportunity. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory seems like a wonderful place to work.

Interviewed Feb 2010 in Woodbury, NY (took 4+ weeks)
There was initially a phone call interview which was later followed up with an on-site interview. It took probably about a month for the entire interview process. Everybody during the on-site interview were really laid back. The diversity of the researchers was very impressive as many of them came from all over the world. During the on-site interview not much emphasis was placed on how fast-paced and little training (less than 6-months) would be involved for the job. This would later result in my termination with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. I still have a lot of respect for Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory as I am still getting paid while I look for a new job and my supervisor allowed me to use him as a permanent reference as well as keeping my termination a secret from the rest of the lab such as making it look like I quitted my job rather than being terminated. Of course my termination was nothing personal as it was just not being able to learn and perform my job quick enough. It was expected that I would hit the ground running when I started the job which I was not aware of. It is almost like they didn't even give me a chance since I just graduated from college and had little research experience. This probably is what you should expect from a very prestigious research insitution. Overall I just didn't know what I was getting myself into. Due to the economy I accepted my first job offer which was Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Make sure to ask questions about training and if the job is fast-paced!

Negotiation Details
I didnt negotiate although this was a bad idea since I learnt later that one HAS to negotiate even post doc offers. I could have definitely gotten more if I had.

Interviewed Jan 2008 (took 1+ week)
I was initially contacted by email to have a phone interview. It was very informal since they asked me to tell them about myself and so I did. I then got an immediate email stating that they would like me to come in for a face to face interview. HR made a mistake in giving the PI the wrong time of the interview but when I came they were still there and they understood that it was HRs fault. The interviewers were very friendly. I first met with the main 2 and then the manager of the lab. I was then given a tour of the place and introduced to the members of the lab.
