i was contacted by the office and was told that my resume was found on career builder and would I be available for an interview. My first interview was postponed. My second interview I showed up and was interviewed by a different person that I was scheduled for. he was very nice and we chatted about our backgrounds and the company. The person I was scheduled for did come in who was also very nice,apologized for being late and told me about the position which is being self employed and requires an online course and some testing and then a state license. although I was not interesred in a commission based career-somehow both of these people made me feel that I was more than capable of achieving a nice salary, flexible schedule and to help people in the process and I would be successful at it. they did tell me there would be cold calling involved, presentations to business owners and also employee presentations. Everything they have stated was pretty accurate. i have been here about 8 months. Nice people!

She explained what the company does and what I'd be doing and how commission works. Then, I was contacted by a manager and officially hired. I still have to meet with him to further discuss details and where I go from here.

Pressure on everyone to recruit. You may be offered a position not because you are right for the job, but because you are there and the territory manager, the district manager or recruiter needs to make recruiting quota. They need you more than you need them. No matter what is said about being selective they are not.

Commission only, if they offer an advance take it but keep in mind it is week by week no matter how it is presented to you. If you have prior experience at AFLAC or other voluntary benefits companies it will help. Make sure you have other sources of income. Some people at Colonial make excellent compensation, most suffer and very few are in the middle.

It was an easy process, they will hire anyone that says yes to a 1099 position. Interview and background was easy. Communication was a little slow though

Initially, the position they are trying to fill sounds like a solid salaried Management job. You soon learn that it is actually a Sales Rep/Manager job that is commission only and you must also recruit a team under you while you are trying to cold call businesses etc. They go through how much money you can make by just closing a couple of deals here and there. Then they pull out the chart showing tier and bonus levels etc, which could prove lucrative if you already have a gigantic book of business ready to sign up for the benefits package. Their main sales pitch incorporates the flexible spending account to save business and employees money. This makes sense, but it's hard to convince somebody to do all of this in a poor economy. All they want is to sell benefits and supplemental benefits packages. With almost 10 years of executive experience I have no desire to cold call and beat down doors all day, so I declined the job.

The hiring process was enjoyable. I received a call from the human resource employee and scheduled a time to come in for the interview. The human resource employees are extremely nice and even make sure you are prepared for the interview. The interview consisted of one interview to discuss the resume' and another interview with behavioral questions.

The interview was related to your leadership and teamwork skills. They want to know that you're the kind of person who will be a leader at their company.
The interviewer was polite but not very professional. She attempted to change the interview day an hour before my scheduled interview because she wanted to go home early (which she pretty much said to me). She also did not give me any time to ask questions, when I was very interested asking about the position as its online description is very vague.
I only had the one phone interview, but apparently the second interview is via webcam with someone else from their office.
