Interviewed Aug 2010 (took 4+ weeks)
I was first contacted by email(within about 1-3 days of sending in the application) and asked to call their office and I screener who asked some basic questions about me. She set up a time for me to go to a group interview the next week, I believe. The group interview consisted mostly of a presentation but we were also asked to do "homework" and bring in a picture of a product from the store that we could use and explain to the group what we'd use it for. After that, I didn't hear back for a 2 weeks or so and was asked to come in for an interview with a manager which was very, very brief.

Interviewed Oct 2010 (took 2 days)
Very positive, albeit scripted, group interview. We were asked to sell a product to the other job candidates and to get an aisle of the store ready for opening. It seemed a little long for an initial retail interview, but it was overall a positive experience and made me want to work there. Seems like a good place for a work life in transition, as so many are right now.

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Coppell, TX (took 3 days)
The Container Store was very professional in its interview process. The initial interview lasted about 20 minutes and took place by phone. The second interview took place at their offices with the VP - Accounting and an HR representative. The third interview lasted about 2 hours, took place in three phases, and involved 5 people in the accounting department as well as an HR person. Each person showed an appreciation of the work environment and displayed obvious teamwork. Ultimately, they determined that the job description was, perhaps, not what they really needed now (a decision obviously made by the team) and decided not to fill the position at this time. I appreciated that they phoned me to relay this information.l

Interviewed Nov 2009 (took 2 weeks)
The interview consisted of a group of people (around 15) and two Container Store employees. They didn't tell us up-front that it would last a loooooonnnnnnngggg time. It took several hours and it would have been extremely helpful to have known that going in. Then, it took a very long time for someone to contact me after the group interview. When they DID contact me, they wanted me to come and interview that same day--like in a couple of hours! I declined and said I had found something else. These two experiences gave me the impression that Container Store doesn't respect your time.

Interviewed Aug 2008 in Corte Madera, CA (took 1 week)
It was a promotion type interview. To transfer stores, and get promoted to a training position... It was a good opportunity for me, they were very organized, very welcoming and asked great questions and provided me with wonderful information about their location and why they would be a good fit for me.

Negotiation Details
There was really no negotiation. They thought they were all worth it, and felt that they were the right place and they did not need to offer me anything. I was in a place where I needed a change and I regret not negotiating. That is my mistake, do not let it be yours. You are always worth more than they make you feel as though you are worth.

Interviewed Dec 2009 in Houston, TX (took 3 weeks)
You better be friends with someone who works there or you can pretty much forget it. Everyone I know with a job there has a referral. People are great. It is retail. Maybe the best in retail but still retail. You have to stay busy when you are slow and you have to move faster when you are not.

Interviewed Nov 2008 (took 2 days)
One must apply online at various locations. When an opening becomes available you will be brought into the store to interview one on one with the stores manager, or regional personnel director. You have to appear upbeat to have the highest likelihood of success. The culture is upbeat despite what a pessimist might believe the people are genuine, this can be unsettling to some however.
