I applied in-person and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Cost Plus in December 2013.
Interview Details – I was told of the position by a friend and I said I was interested. I first filled out an application online and then they set up a meeting with the supervisor in charge of hiring the next day. I showed up 15 minutes early in a dress shirt, slacks, and business shoes. After meeting with my interviewer, he lead me back to the office where he began a one on one interview. My interview was different in regards to the fact that they needed people for the season and they didn't have enough people applying for a group interview. The normal process is for a group of 6 to 8 people to interview together. Going back, he began the interview by questioning my work history and experience and then asking about what I thought of my attributes and lack of attributes. He then proceeded to ask situational questions. How would you boost sales if a customer had this in their basket or what would you do if you were given multiple tasks and limited time etc. After a few more basic questions he said he would talk to the general manager and he told me to watch my email for an offer.
Interview Question – How would you boost or improve sales if a customer had this in their basket or cart. Answer Question
Negotiation Details – I was not able to negotiate pay. I was given a number and told that was the highest that they could go.
I applied online and the process took 3 days - interviewed at Cost Plus in November 2013.
Interview Details – First interview is a group interview, mine was just with one other person but later I saw interviews of like 8 people. You are pretty much working together not pitted against one another. Then you are called back for a second interview that is individual, also if you are being hired on a good reference from another employee you might not have to come for a second interview.
Interview Question – What is your spirit animal? (like wth) Answer Question
Negotiation Details – There was no negotiation. I had heard sales associates were paid $8.50 an hour but was later told during hiring paperwork that it was $8.25, only find out some other employees with the same position who were also new were paid $8.50. Never discussed pay in interview.
I applied online and the process took 5 weeks - interviewed at Cost Plus in November 2013.
Interview Details – I started the process in October, they had 2 stores that were in the need of store managers, I told them I would be happy with either store. Another store came up, so there were 3 avail. I had a phone interview with recruiter about an hour. In person interview with District Manager 3 hour conversation, was told I was a great match. Did another phone interview for an hour with HR manager. After this did another phone interview for an hour with another district manager. All of this took place over a month. After the last interview, I emailed the DM, no reply, emailed a week later no reply. After 5 weeks from when this process started I was given a letter that stated they had promoted from within for all 3 stores.

Interview Details –
I applied online on their website. Decided to go in the store for a follow up with a manager( I think this is the way in the door, not sure I would have received a call about the group interview). Manager told me to come in on a certain day for a group interview.
During the group interview we were asked several customer service questions....Was there ever a time when you went above and beyond to help a customer, the job you most disliked, how do you like to be thanked when doing your job, why do you want to work here?. Remember to smile, the other people in the interview did not smile and I don't see them in the store. We also had to fill out a paper of times available to work.
The store closes at 9pm but you work until 10pm straightening up the store.
At the end we were told we could be called for a second interview.
Second interview, interviewed by two people, was pretty much the same questions as group interview. Your favorite item in the store and tell them how you would sell it to a customer, I told them how I would sell two items. Do you shop there? Have you ever gone against store policy? How would you disagree with a supervisor?
Somone asked in the group interview about hourly pay and was told $8.50-$9.50.
We were also told, if they like us at the end of the season, January, we could be offered a permanent postition.
Interview Question – A time when you went above and beyond to help a customer. View Answer
Negotiation Details – I was called and offered the job but I had to go online, log in and accept the offer. I'm not sure if you can negotiate here at the beginning. My starting hourly is $8.50 an hour and I was told after a couple of weeks they would review me and the hourly could go up. I have years of customer service and selling but am starting at the bottom of the pay scale.

Very Easy Interview
I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Cost Plus in October 2013.
Interview Details – I filled out the app online and was contacted by email a few days later instructing me to call to secure my spot for a group interview on Tuesday. When I arrived I was told the GM would be with me shortly and, in the meantime, I should walk the store and find an item to "sell" during the interview. The interview was very casual and the questions were simple with each of the three candidates taking turns answering them. Even the "sales pitch" was easy as he really just wanted to hear us give the benefits of the item without expecting us to close the deal. Three days later, the GM called me to offer the job.
Interview Question – The sales pitch was unexpected but not difficult. Just find something you would be interested in buying and list all the reasons why. Answer Question
Negotiation Details – No negotiation. It's a seasonal hourly job.
I applied online and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Cost Plus.
Interview Details – I received an email about 2 weeks after applying with a number to call if I was still interested in the position. I called and was given the date of a group interview to attend. The interview was very relaxed, just 5 applicants and two managers sitting in a circle in the furniture department. It lasted about 1.5 hours. The applicants were given the task of finding an item in the store that we would try to sell as an add-on. We had to explain why we would pick it and how the customer would benefit from participating in the rewards program when purchasing this item. After that we were assigned partners, interviewed our partners, and then told the rest of the group about this person and why they would be good for the job. After that we all answered generic interview questions. I received an email notification within the week with a job offer.
Interview Question – How would you personally like to be rewarded for a job well done? Answer Question
Negotiation Details – I didn't negotiate but kind of wish I would have. Their wage offer will differ depending on your job qualifications, however.
I applied in-person and the process took a day - interviewed at Cost Plus.
Interview Details – Applied in-person. Got a call back within 2 weeks for an interview. Group interview. Only one person (me) out of about 10 was hired. This seemed very rude to me--especially for a near minimum wage position. We were interviewed only by the store manager. I wouldn't meet my direct boss until the first day of the job.
Interview Question – We were instructed to interview each other and then introduce each other. View Answer
Negotiation Details – Entry-level, near minimum wage job. I grabbed it for a summer break before college.
I applied through a recruiter and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Cost Plus in September 2013.
Interview Details – Phone contact by recruiter. Phone interview. In person interview (2 different people).
