Interviewed Nov 2011 (took 4 weeks)
I applied with a CV and cover letter and got invited to the interview. It was pretty straightforward. THey asked me why I wanted to work for the company, what skills I could bring to them. It was prety informal and although one of the interviewees (there were 2) grilled me on how I would solve particular problem, he was still friendly. Very professional and nice people.

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Chicago, IL (took a day)
I found the positon via job boards online and applied. Someone from the company called me back within a few days. We scheduled a phone interview. The day of the interview I made sure I was prepared and had a quiet location to speak in. 10 mins past our set time, nothing, 30 mins, 60 mins.... nothing. I called her and left a message and NEVER received any call back as an apology or to reschedule. This made me realize I would not want to work for a company that was so unprofessional.

Interviewed Sep 2008 in Chicago, IL (took 3 weeks)
Human resources at Crain's is a nightmare--combative, unprofessional. One specific human resources executive passes judgment on candidates based on her very own personal preferences. If you can make it past her and interview with the editorial team, the experience is much more pleasurable. The editors I interviewed with were professional, frank and enjoyable to talk to. They didn't throw too many difficult questions out there. I just talked about my past experience and maybe answered 1-2 behavioral questions. Definitely do your homework on whatever publication you're researching for so you can tell them how you would approach covering the industry. Once I had the job I found there wasn't a lot of organization, or communication, which is really no different than any other newsroom I've worked in. But I did really liked the people. They were smart, nice, friendly and helpful. All interactions with the hiring human resources manager were fairly negative. She just has an axe to grind and appreciates her position of power and making others feel small.

Interviewed Apr 2008 in Detroit, MI (took 2 weeks)
Very typical hiring process - phone screen, then phone interview with the manager and the director, then they flew me out to Michigan for the final interview with the team. It went very well.
