Interviewed Apr 2012 in Durham, NC (took a day)
Screening round was over the phone. They asked basic LED questions
On-site was much more rigorous. All the interviews listed below were on the same day. Presentation to a panel of interviewers and I was interviewed by each one of them in turn.
Round 1: HR interview - given overview of Cree etc.
Round 2: Presentation - a project that you've worked on
Round 3: Questions about presentation and background
Round 4: Pressure Interview
Round 5: Lunch interview (behavioral)
Round 6: Questions about presentation and basic LED concepts
Round 7: Questions about presentation and background
Round 8: Did not happen because he was busy
On the whole I was very pleased with the interview experience. It was an exhausting day, but the interviewers were very friendly and courteous.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Durham, NC (took 3 days)
I applied through Cree's website for this position. The next day, I received an e-mail to do a phone screen with HR. The questions were pretty simple and mainly involved personality questions as well as what I knew about the company. After the phone interview, I was contacted by a hiring manager to do a technical phone screen. During this interview, I was mostly asked a lot of questions on why I left grad school with a non-thesis masters. I also got a couple of questions about what I knew about LEDs. Afterwards, I was told I would be coming in for an onsite interview. The onsite interview involves you giving a 30 minute presentation to a group of about 10 people about a technical project you had worked on. They don't ask questions during the presentation, but you meet with each person 1 on 1 for about 30-45 minutes to talk about your presentation. It was a very long process and each person kept asking a lot of questions about my reasons for leaving grad school and criticized the length of time it took for me to finish my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I also got more technical questions about LEDs as well as questions that were logic tests and basic engineering concepts. The thing I was most disappointed about was that they would not answer any of my questions with a straightforward answer. Overall, they are a company that works hard, and they want people that will work until they get the job done. I'm grateful that they at least were upfront with me about how intense the work environment was going to be, and that I realized it wasn't for me.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Durham, NC (took 2 weeks)
Reading the other interview experiences, I did not believe the consensus. Then I had a phone conversation with the engineer from the group. Let me tell you that in my post interview experience, I strongly concur with the rest of the posts here. One thing that comes up is the company tells you "we do not discuss that with outsiders" to any question asked of them, but will berate you with various questions, some which have nothing to do with their particular industry. I asked a question about a post process measurement procedure, which by no means is proprietary or secret. Quite to the contrary, general measurement should freely be discussed as you never know what you might learn. This interviewer was completely different from any other I have had, and would not wish to repeat. Every other interview or communication I have had was pleasant and irrespective of the outcome left me feeling invigorated by lively discussion. This one did not, and the other reviews are pretty much right on target.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Durham, NC (took a day)
Phone interview that seemed to go well, but no follow-up interview. I was a little wary about this company to begin with, based on other reviews, and so I'm not terribly disappointed that nothing seems to have come of it. Interview was with an HR person, so no crazy questions, as others have mentioned.
