Interviewed Jan 2010 in Hyderabad (India) (took 2+ weeks)
What I felt mattered a lot to interviewers from Shaw was:
a. Do you really know the core concepts of Computer Science
b. Are you comfortable with coding (They might ask you to write small code snippets)
c. How good are you in the things you CLAIM to know.
(They will interview on this rigorously)
d. How concisely can you communicate your thoughts

Interviewed Nov 2011 in Hyderabad (India) (took a day)
I got in through a campus placement process. DE Shaw people came down to our college and we had a process of an aptitude test, a GD and a PI. The interview was excellent. The best part was that they focussed on the analytical part. Asked me a few questions about statistics, catastrophe modeling, cat bonds, and claims reserving in re-insurance.
Nice, brilliant people, and gr8 work culture. The best part is you need not to be so formal in office as in other companies.

Interviewed Jan 2009 in Hyderabad (India) (took 2 days)
The interviewer first started with technical questions and then he was asking rasict/controversial questions to every candidate.
Bengalis were asked about Naxalism in Bengal, Biharis were asked to compare Lalu and Nitish, Gujaratis were asked about Modi and communal riots, Mumbaikars were asked about Raj Thackarey etc
Basically, when they saw that the candidate is technically good, they would stoop to this level.
Finally, they hired 3 guys, who were from the same city where this company's office is based.

Applied through a recruiting agency. Recruitment process held in Bangalore (India). No travel reimbursements / lunch etc is provided. You are required to carry 4 copies of your resume. People with CFA etc qualifications etc are preferred. Apart from this, they also look at people with strong mathematical skills.
Round 1: IQ Test. Basic maths questions.
Round 2: Creativity Test. You will be given a random picture and asked to write an essay on it. We were given a picture of a man confused between 6-7 roads at an intersection.

Round 4: Personal Interview Round 2 (HR Stuff)
After this, they let you go, and say that they will inform of the results in 2 weeks. No results are announced on the spot.
