I applied in-person and the process took 3 months - interviewed at DLR in April 2009.
Interview Details – It all starts with the submission of the legetimate documents for a PhD position with University Professors recommendation letter.
Then, you receive an invitation per post for an interview in the DLR Cologne or via Skype or similar.
The people there are very very friendly and make you feel very comfortable.
Usually, you have to present a power point and have a more detailed interviews with a few prof and Dr. working there.

Interview Details – Sent email with application, then I had the interview about two weeks later with the director of the institute and the project leader. Questions about my previous experience, why I applied and they gave me additional information about the positions and the institute
