Interviewed Jan 2012 in Atlanta, GA (took 3+ weeks)
1. Applied on-line: http://deltajobs.net/career_destinations.htm, found via Craigslist.com
2. A confirmation email containing further instruction to complete a set of test on-line and submission of resume on-line
3. A confirmation email to take an automated language test via phone with (3) questions, (1) revealed and (2) unknown, call toll free number to proceed with a test - only one chance to complete this test but if you do not proceed (disconnected/hung up before starting a test) you will receive a reminder email to complete.
4. A email to schedule a phone interview with a recruiter, 3 questions concerning how you may respond to difficult situations.
5. A confirmation email to schedule a trip to HQ in Atlanta, GA, selected one of (2) 6 hour interview sessions, 7:30AM or 12:30PM. (3) accommodation choices, Hyatt, Westin or Sheraton at Delta corporate rate of $70 plus tax. NOTE: They will send (3) confirmation emails prior to your trip; 1. Acceptance, 2. Travel arrangement, and 3. Interview instructions, in these order, however, travel arrangement and Interview instructions will arrive only 2 -3 days prior to your interview date, be patient, you are already accepted.
6. If you stay at one of the assigned hotels, there's a free shuttle to the HQ but availability is limited, Taxi is $15 to the HQ. NOTE: The instruction states to meet 2nd floor lobby but the ground level lobby is the 2nd floor and you must obtain your guest pass at the security booth first. If you arrive early, there are numerous amenities inside the HQ building across the street.
8. HR director and recruiters/interviewers will greet the candidates and suggested not get nervous and enjoy the experience.
9. The candidates are then escorted to the HR facility across the street.
10. All candidates are escorted to the AV room to watch an intro video.
11. All candidates must introduce themselves to the group; name, where you reside, language you speak and why you chose FA position.
12. The candidate group was divided into 3 group, 1. physical requirement, 2. documentation, and 3. Private interview with (2) recruiters.
IMPORTANT: you need to pay attention very carefully on interview process understanding the questions very well. The last part of private interview is the presentation skill. I recommend you to stand up and get comfortable before you start. Though there is a pen and notepad to prepare your speech, i believe they are looking for your genuine ad-libbing skill. Be yourself, natural and sincere.
13. Upon completion of all candidates interview process, all candidates are again gathered in the AV room where they discretely and ingeniously separates candidates. Those candidates remained in the room will then be congratulated by HR director that you are conditionally accepted.
14. It is conditionally accepted because: 1. drug screening test, 2. background check, and 3. 8-week training.
Besides all of the above facts, here's what I can share.
1. If you are not comfortable with different belief, sexual orientations or culture/nationalities, don't bother to apply.
2. If you are not single and your family needs you on regular basis, don't bother applying. NOTE: 8-week training is really straight 8-week! 5 days on ground, 2 days on-air. Can't come home for 8 weeks unless you are in Atlanta commuting to HQ.
3. If you like 9-5 schedule, don't bother applying, you have to be alert and ready to serve for long duration of 12 hrs or more.
4. If you are claustrophobia, aquaphobia, acrophobia, crowd phobia, phobia of smoke, or thanatophobia, find another career. Though a chance of crush is negligible, you must realize that it does occur.
5. If you are reading this last part only, pay all your attention. I was an oldest candidate (Walmart may not hire me) in the group and probably with the least amount of education - some were MBA, BA, AA, etc. - so why they picked me out of whooping 130,000 applicants? Here's what I think I had that they liked; 1. Sincerity, 2. Uplifted personality, 3. Wit, 4. Dedication, 5. Knowledge about Delta - super important!, 6. Ability to focus. and 7. constant eye contact. DO NOT think about over/under qualification, the company has an excellent training and you do not need to know anything about being a FA but an ability and willingness to accept, learn about the position and provide the best service possible. After all, FA is the face of the airliner, so be ready to become Delta and enjoy the journey. Delta provides the best benefit package in the industry with least amount of probation period (30 days) so you and your immediate family member can fly free anywhere in the world ($50 annual registration fee per person). Delta is one of the very few that still pays during the training period.
Good luck!
