that's a real nasty question by the interviewer. i would respond with a question, such as "what do you mean?"

"Not really. Most people I know in this industry are employed."
Or something to that effect.
The idea is that you want to humbly imply that you (and the people you associate with) are "good performers", who of course would never get laid off!
Admitting you are unemployed and that you know lots of people who are too is like painting "LOSER" on your forehead.
