Interviewed Aug 2010 (took 3 weeks)
I applied online for Dollar General Store Management. I received a call the day I put my application online. I was then directed to an online assessment test. After completion of the test. I received an email to conduct a phone interview, due to a personal commitment, I had to wait for this interview, when I had the phone interview, the next step was the interview with the DM, who offered me the job and am now in the process of working out my two week notice with recent company.

Interviewed May 2010 in Krum, TX (took a day)
Walked in on job fair. Filled the last position at the last minute. It took less than 30 minutes- which was just me learning about the drug test, info about the store, how long it would take to get through the screening process and when I'd expect a call. I was never asked questions about my experience. I was told what to say when I start my position. I was asked what hours I would be available to work.
After a week there, I was told the tore manager didn't need a new person but took me anyway. Could explain my treatment.

Interviewed Jun 2010 in Rock Hill, SC (took 2 weeks)
Applied online for several SMC and Store Manager positions after almost a year of employment as the assistant manager to no avail until I sat down and had a 1 on 1 with my district manager. After recognizing my goal of becoming a Store Manager he went to work on trying to get me an SMC position, but after examining my work ethic and track record, he believed I was ready to take on a store and set up an interview for me with the RVP which went very smoothly.

Interviewed Apr 2010 (took a day)
I applied in person and asked approximately how long it might be before I was contacted. I was told that if the manager was interested in my application, I would be called and asked to come back to take a 'test' on the computer. I was called about 3-4 weeks later and went to the store for the computer 'test' that basically consisted of situational questions. There were approximately 30-50 questions. When I was finished, the manager said that it would be about a week or two before they would get the "results" back and I would be contacted. (No one did.)
I also applied at another location. Since it had been less than a month since I had taken the computer test (at the first store), I would not have to take it again. I was called and scheduled for an interview roughly a week later. I arrived at the store and interviewer was busy assisting customers, so I waited approximately 5 minutes. I was escorted to the back room of the store and sat at a "break table" and we proceeded to go over my application information. I was asked very general questions. For example, I was asked about what former employers might say about me if they were contacted, as well as any co-workers and references. Most of the interview consisted of her describing, in moderate detail, what a typical day would usually consist of, how the scheduling system worked, what would be expected of a prospective employee, (to some degree) how the management system worked (as far as managers, district managers, etc). This process was very interactive as far as being able to ask questions during the description process for even greater informational detail.
I thought that my interview had gone well, considering it went way over the given approximate timetable of 20-30 minutes. (Interview lasted just over an hour). I was told that I would be contacted in 3-4 weeks on account that they had just initiated the application-accepting process and would be conducting more interviews. They said that I would be contacted with the results of my interview "one way or another" (whether I would be offered the job/requested for another interview or declined the job). I waited several weeks and heard nothing, so I went back to the store, spoke to a different "manager" and was informed that they had already hired some new people. I informed her that I was never contacted and they "appologized" and said that they would keep my application and keep me in mind if one of the new hires did not work out, etc.

Interviewed Feb 2009 (took 3 days)
Had a phone interview first and then a one on one interview with two separate mangers. The job hours and expectations were ridiculous for the pay range offered, but in this economy you take what you can get. A contingent job offer was made but I needed to pass a online assessment and according to the DM the last few candidates had failed this portion. I was not worried with a great work ethic and 15 years of experience I figured it was a no brainier... wrong. I am not sure what they are looking for but it is not a competent hard worker so be wary.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in North Aurora, IL (took 5 days)
The phone interview was great, even though very brief. Arrived to the store location only to find the dm was not there and nobody had heard from her. When she did finally get there and set-up, she seemed very disconnected with me and more concerned about a cart out of place. It was NOT an interview at all, but more of a way for her to tell me about her 2 months that she had been there and how hard the job was. I was turned off by her negativity, especially being so new. Then she went into a 20 minute rant about how they do drug tests and at random too. Not sure if she was upset for her own abuse or accusing me. Either way, why would she think that this type of information was more important than any of the work experience I was trying to share?? Overall, this would be the last place or person I would ever work for!
