I was prompted by a Director in HR to apply and posted my interest through the company's internal website. I knew there would be a panel interview with a focus on targeted selection using the STAR approach (situation, task, action, and result), so I found interview questions on the internet and had three friends do a mock interview. In preparation, I purchased a new suit, tie, shoes and also got a haircut. I made certain to get a good night of sleep - typically, I only get 4-5 hours of sleep but I made sure to go to bed early enough to get 8 hours of sleep.
On the day of the interview, I arrived 15 minutes early, made sure I had extra copies of my resume, and created a portfolio of my most recent accomplishments. The interview panel consisted of a manager, a director and an employee within the department in which I applied. Being rather new to the area of HR, I did not know any of the interviewers; however, I had heard good things about them and knew they were well respected. Because I already enjoyed my current position, I walked in with an upbeat attitude, knowing that if I did not get the position then it was not meant to be. I believe that having that advanced thought process helped me to be able to relax during the interview and answer each question with sincerity and enthusiasm.

I did not negotiate the salary because I knew I would be getting a substantial increase in pay since I would be moving from the role of an individual contributor to the manager of the department.

Interviewed with a recruiter at a career fair. Typical STAR questions. Later interviewed with HR, where more logistical questions were asked. Finished with a final phone interview with the supervisor, who asked detailed questions about my education background. It was a long process...the longest I've dealt with when interviewing.

Was called mid-,March to schedule the first interview. Interviewed with a HR person, was told I would hear back in a week, heard back after 2 and a half . The second was with my actual office manager.

I had to submit couple of essays, resume, transcript and resume. There were 2 rounds of interviews--1) At least 4 managers from different branches got together and phone interviews me using a conference call. Each asked specific questions as to my leadership experience. The interview lasted at least an hour. 2) The last interview was from my soon-to-be direct manager, at least 30 minutes talking about my fit for the specific role I was to take.

The interview was for an administrative assistant position. The interview was conducted by the administrative assistant, safety officer, and a field safety person. The interview was very laid back. Each person on the panel asked several questions, mostly pertaining to what if situations or experience situations. At the end of the interview I was walked out to the entry gate and asked "How old are your kids"? I never mentioned having children in the interview or anywhere else. It was very inappropriate for the interviewer to ask me that question and I did not even think twice about answering the question. I should have said "I don't remember saying that I had kids."

I was an internal candidate. Knew two of the interviewers but not one, who would have been my new boss. After the interview I had to write a letter which pertained to a potential environmental violation which represented something I would likely need to perform in the job. The interview questions were pretty general, and were oriented a little too much toward incumbents in that particular department, but I think the interviewers cut me some slack because of that.
