Interviewed Jan 2012 in Redwood City, CA (took 2 weeks)
First round interview was with HR. A bit annoying but nothing special like why *** and the greatest achievement. CEO seemed really picky and hiring manager also seemed to suffer from that. They made it clear that all negative reviews (regarding $) here are so true.

Reason for Declining
Salary level was a joke. I tried to negotiate but they just made ridiculous excuses. (potential of Equilar blah blah...) Chose other big company in Bay Area.
Other Details
I Applied Online and the interview consisted of a Phone Interview and a 1:1 Interview.

Interviewed Dec 2011 in Redwood City, CA (took 2 weeks)
I was initially contacted by a HR associate by e-mail to set up a phone screening. She was very polite and did a good job of asking the standard questions. Soon after, she e-mailed me to set up an in-person and gave me three time options. The first round was with two managers from the sales team, both of whom were great. I was struck with the nice, friendly atmosphere that seemingly contradicted the negative employee reviews I read on here.
The next day, I was e-mailed to set up a second round interview with the CEO, whom I was told meets with each prospective hire. When I arrived, I was brought into a conference room and told that the he would be in shortly. After waiting for thirty-five minutes, he came in and made no eye contact or introduction and barely shook my hand. Within five seconds, he started rapid fire questions in an aggressive, condescending manner, which included a lot of interruption and outright rejection of my answers (think along the lines of "That's nonsense" or "That's not a real example"). Additionally, all his questions were negative in tone such as "What are your weaknesses?" or "What is your biggest regret?" He seemed to care very little about what value or skills I could bring. Within five minutes, he was out of the door. When one of the awesome managers was escorting me out, I noticed that the congenial, positive atmosphere that I had noticed the week before was replaced with the grim, disturbingly silent one that is described on this site. I attribute this to the fact that the CEO was in the office and his draconian, distrustful policies were therefore in place.
I was contacted later that day by one of the nice managers I had initially spoke with regarding next steps, which were to include a research skills test, but I politely declined and told him that I would be pursuing other opportunities. It's a shame, as Equilar has some pretty interesting and influential work and a staff that consists of some smart and friendly individuals. The overall atmosphere, however, seems to be one of oppression and fear.

Interviewed Apr 2011 in Redwood City, CA (took 6 weeks)
A couple days after submitting my resume and cover letter, I was contacted by a recruited at Equilar to set up a phone interview. The phone interview was very brief and easy, and consisted of the very basic questions about my interest in Equilar and afforded me an opportunity to better understand the goals of the company. After the phone interview, I completed a personality test and was contacted again to set up an on-site, in-person interview. The interview lasted about 3 hours and consisted of several mini interviews and two skills tests. I met with 5 different research managers and the CEO of the company. Less than a week later, they contacted me for a final-round presentation-based interview. I had to give a 15 minute presentation on perquisites. After the presentation, they asked me questions about perquisites and then gave me an opportunity to ask more questions. About two weeks later, I received a letter saying that I did not fit their needs.

Phone interview first, and then they make you fill out a personality questionnaire. You then move on to a one on one interview (mine took about 2.5 hours and I talked to 3 different people) and also have you take an assessment test. If you move on after that, you then have to make a presentation on an assigned topic.

Interviewed May 2010 in Redwood City, CA (took 4+ weeks)
Interview process is mostly standard, i.e. applied online, phone followed by 2 rounds of face-to-face interviews. Questions are also mostly standard situational questions. I suspect the final decision on hiring for most positions rests with the CEO as the hiring manager hinted. After interviewing with the CEO, he came across as imperial and arrogant (red flag). Definitely not the most pleasant experience but everyone else I interviewed with was fine. Once you get the the final rounds, impressing the CEO will be the key to getting the job. But be sure to read the reviews from past employees before you consider accepting.
