I explain this about once a week to people because I frequently encounter people who don't understand "tech terms" Now this is a real basic concept vs explaining file systems, broken shortcuts, corruption of data etc... so my basic speech that people always understand is:

"Say you just cleaned your house completely, and a month or two has passed and you feel you need to do a deep clean again. During that month or two you've let pass, there's tasks you've put off, or items on the floor or counters which you maneuver around until you get to it. Imagine data moving as if you moved day to day and what you would have to adjust if that plant on the counter was a little bit in the way of the cutting board or toaster or the kids toys are all over; that is what your data is doing, therefore your computer functions slower. It happens in every hard drive over time that is frequently used"
