Interviewed Oct 2011 in Edmonton, AB (Canada) (took a day)
Radio, newspaper and job fair advertisements prompted me to telephone the regional office which resulted in a 1:1 interview the next day. They seemed very eager to offer driver training, as they are always short of drivers. My background as a mechanic was welcomed, as it assists them to diagnose mechanical problems arise with the bus while on the route. Driver classroom training began 4 days later at the first opportunity to join a class. The instructors were experienced and knowledgeable, but certainly taught the examination questions rather than the textbook comprehensively. The "on the road" training was also very good with specific training in what the government examiner would be looking for. Upon successful completion of the training and government road test, I was given a large selection of routes to choose from and my first choice was agreed to, as it had been serviced by a temporary driver for some time and they were glad to have a full-time regular driver on that route.

Interviewed Jul 2010 in Toronto, ON (Canada) (took 2 days)
It looks like they need a lot of people and so they bring in a lot of people to what they call an "orientation" session. They try to weed out people as quickly as possible. After the first few hours of questioning, many of us left because we figured out the pay structure, which was shockingly low. Basically, the whole process started with me noticing their ads and contacting them. Then they interviewed me over the phone - basically about my age (over 21) and my driving record and a few other questions. Then the lady said to come into the next "orientation" session. It turns out that you have to pick up your bus every morning, do your morning route and do your afternoon route, at minimum. You get $25 for each route. You can often take on more trips during the day: taking morning kindergarten kids home at lunch and taking afternoon kindergarten kids to school after lunch. You might also do a field trip to the science centre, or something like that. The extra trips are paid for at $10.50 per hour!!!!! You need a B class licence, I think she said: if you are accepted, then they will train you for three weeks and you'll get 25 hours driving before you graduate. You don't get paid for this training, but you don't pay anything for it either. I finally got out of her that you can make from $50 per day up to $75 per day. The lady, Anna, was selling the job as a a great job for those who love to look after kids and will take it very seriously. In other words, you're not doing it for the money. Personally, I do agree that you have to understand the importance of driving peoples' children around, and I do agree that it is a great job that way. However, I need to make more money than that - I told her that I had to make $100 per day, minimum, for the next year, so I just couldn't do it.
