I first had a phone screening which lasted for about 10 minutes. Then, another phone interview which lasted for 20 minutes. I was asked basic interview questions. They got to know about my favourite courses in school, experience about safety in engineering, and they were really interested in me having questions to ask them. They also asked why i chose civil engineering?

Submitted resume online, was called back within 2 weeks. Then was in limbo for about 2 months while a re org was taking place within the company. Had a face to face interview with my manager, director, and operations director. Very easy to talk to, and asked some technical questions. Great Experience

    Reactor Operator Interview

I applied online – interviewed at FirstEnergy in March 2014.

    Interview Details

I interviewed (phone interview) for a Reactor Operator position at Beaver Valley Power Station in Shippingport, PA. The interview started off pretty light. I was informed of the shiftwork rotation and overtime policy. Then, some basic questions about my ability to handle firefighting responsibilities, physical requirements, and handling of radioactive material. Then, the questions started. Typical questions such as "What is your greatest strength?" and "Describe a time when you felt you were under pressure". Then, the focus shifted to determining my compliance with procedures with questions such as "What would you do if a supervisor pressured you into performing an evolution that you knew broke the rules?" Overall, the interview was very easy because I had written answers down for these stereotypical questions ahead of time. I was very surprised by the fact that there were no technical questions, but my interviewer also said he was skipping a lot of questions. Total interview time... 50 minutes

    Interview Questions
    • I would say the first question about deviating from procedures really caught me off guard because I felt as though a simple "Why would I ever do that??" response would not have been warranted... Even though thats how I felt.   Answer Question

I applied online. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at FirstEnergy in June 2013.

    Interview Details

I was contacted via email by recruiter that the company would like to schedule an in-person interview. I met with the hiring manager and her manager for an initial interview and was told I would be contacted within a week if they decided to ask me back for a second interview. The interview lasted about an hour. I was contacted 3 days later and asked to schedule a second interview. The second interview lasted about 20 minutes and was with the hiring manager and another department colleague. Two days after the second interview I received a call from the recruiter with a job offer. After both interviews I sent a thank you email to the individuals that I had met with.

    Interview Questions
    • Tell me about a situation where you over committed yourself. What were the negative impacts of that over commitment and how did you resolve the situation?   Answer Question

There was very little room for negotiation. The salary offer was set and was supposedly based on what other colleagues were making.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2+ weeksinterviewed at FirstEnergy in April 2013.

    Interview Details

Was contacted by their corporate recruiter, did a brief phone screening a few days later with the recruiter, and was contacted again the following week to set up an on-site interview. Interviewed 2 weeks later with two supervisors from the hiring group. They both went out of their way to make me feel comfortable, and were very warm and accomodating. Light-hearted atmosphere with standard behavior based interview questions. Took me for a tour of the facility. The whole thing took about 1.5 hours and I was out the door. Sent a follow up email 2 days later thanking them for their time and stating how impressed I was with the company. The same day I recieved a call from the corporate recruiter saying he was going to reach out to me anyway to let me know they loved me and are working on getting an offer approved and I should be hearing again from him the following day. The following day, the offer was read over the phone and accepted 2 days later as is, because the package was substantially more than I was expecting. Fantastic process, very easy to work with HR/Recruiting so far!

    Interview Questions
    • Really none. they were all straight forward. Based on the "behavioral based" question types, I was a little shocked that they asked me, at the end of the interview, "Why should we hire you"? This is an older question that I've seen long before behavior based questioning was accepted as the norm.   View Answer

It was so good, I didnt have to negotiate. All i asked for was an additional 30 days of temporary housing and storage for my household goods and told them I'd accept contingent on that stipulation. They got back to me early the next day to accept.

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at FirstEnergy in January 2013.

    Interview Details

The employment process begins through a staffing agency as all jobs through the contact center are temp-to-hire. Initial phone call, online personality test, then an 'aptitude' test at a FirstEnergy location. The aptitude test was, I'm assuming, just assessing basic computing skills as it did not relate to what you'll actually be doing on the job. Lastly, there is an onsite interview with a supervisor.
