    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at FirstEnergy.

    Interview

One 15 minute phone interview covering basic questions about school and myself. Second round interview was on site at a power plant, last about 1.5 hours. Re-covered the basic questions and also covered some other behavioral questions about work and projects. Very relaxed environment. After the interview, a current employee in a similar position to mine gave me a tour of the power plant, gave me the basic overview of how everything went together, and also answered any of my questions about the ROA (rotation on assignment) program that First Energy offers.

    Interview Questions

    • One question that stumped me (as a student coming out of college) was: First Energy is a company extremely concerned with safety, what is the most dangerous job you've performed?   1 Answer

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at FirstEnergy (Shippingport, PA) in March 2015.

    Interview

I was contacted by an HR recruiter about a month or two after initially applying for the position. I was brought out to the plant to take an industry standardized test and their own company math test. The math test is a little bit difficult, especially for those that do not take it seriously. They provide a thorough study guide to prepare you for it so it is pretty fair. They booked a hotel for me, paid by the company, and reimbursed me for mileage, food, and other travel expenses for the testing and the interview. The interview was with the department supervisor only and followed the standard STAR (situation, task, action, result) Q&A format. I received their decision two weeks later.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at FirstEnergy in March 2014.

    Interview

I interviewed (phone interview) for a Reactor Operator position at Beaver Valley Power Station in Shippingport, PA. The interview started off pretty light. I was informed of the shiftwork rotation and overtime policy. Then, some basic questions about my ability to handle firefighting responsibilities, physical requirements, and handling of radioactive material. Then, the questions started. Typical questions such as "What is your greatest strength?" and "Describe a time when you felt you were under pressure". Then, the focus shifted to determining my compliance with procedures with questions such as "What would you do if a supervisor pressured you into performing an evolution that you knew broke the rules?" Overall, the interview was very easy because I had written answers down for these stereotypical questions ahead of time. I was very surprised by the fact that there were no technical questions, but my interviewer also said he was skipping a lot of questions. Total interview time... 50 minutes

    Interview Questions

    • I would say the first question about deviating from procedures really caught me off guard because I felt as though a simple "Why would I ever do that??" response would not have been warranted... Even though thats how I felt.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

I received a job offer within the hour after interviewing.

    Interview

I was contacted via email by recruiter that the company would like to schedule an in-person interview. I met with the hiring manager and her manager for an initial interview and was told I would be contacted within a week if they decided to ask me back for a second interview. The interview lasted about an hour. I was contacted 3 days later and asked to schedule a second interview. The second interview lasted about 20 minutes and was with the hiring manager and another department colleague. Two days after the second interview I received a call from the recruiter with a job offer. After both interviews I sent a thank you email to the individuals that I had met with.

    Interview Questions

    • Tell me about a situation where you over committed yourself. What were the negative impacts of that over commitment and how did you resolve the situation?   Answer Question

    Negotiation

There was very little room for negotiation. The salary offer was set and was supposedly based on what other colleagues were making.
