FHEG uses behavioral interviewing. Know personnel buzzwords. Know the textbook industry. Stress customer service. I believe I did really well, but the company has an information hiring freeze right now -- since the only way you can get a salary bump more than 3 percent is to change location, they don't want to do that. They hire managers in training for cheap from the outside, run them through a program for a year, then place THEM in the open positions. That's what they did for this job - a course materials manager at a MAJOR university, and instead of putting someone in the position who already knows the business and has a proven track record, but who would require a salary increase, they placed a MIT who was a STORE MIT into a course materials job... unqualified for this major job. They are doomed to failure because they don't want to increase pay.

Interviewer gave me a rundown on the position. Then he asked about my previous jobs and my qualifications for this position. In the end he made it known to me I was under-qualified.

Interviewed May 2011 (took a day)
I applied at random one afternoon and got a call back within a month. Scheduled an interview and had it in less than a week. The person who interviewed me was an Assistant Manager who was mid-20's and super laid-back and personable. The interview was in-store. She asked me typical questions (why do you want to work here, etc)

Interviewed Oct 2011 (took 4 weeks)
Consisted of 2 phone interviews with two different people. The next step was to make and present a powerpoint to panel of 3 people and be interviewed by them. It was heartbreaking to go through all of that and not get the job, but everything is a learning experience. I have never had a panel interview before this, and now I have gained that experience. Everyone was nice, and a phone call was given along with feedback, even though I was not selected. I would love to bash the company for putting through all of that, but like I stated, everything is a learning experience and it can only help me the next time around. Good luck to you others!

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Oak Brook, IL (took 1 week)
The interview was very behavioral focused - "Give me an example of something that you were asked to work on and you couldn't meet the deadline, what did you do..." Questions along those lines. The HR rep at the Oak Brook corporate office was a real turn off. She comes across as somewhat condescending. Put me on hold while I was speaking and comes back to the phone and says "there was a conversation going on that I needed to get involved in." Have some respect for the candidate. She also asked me why I wanted to work for Follett. I had not decided that I did want to work for Follett. Just as they were interviewing me, I was interviewing them. I did not like the attitude of the HR woman at all. Prospective employers need to think twice about how they come across to potential employees. Sure, they can always find someone else to take the job, but they are probably losing some really good people along the way.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
I interviewed and the HR rep kept trying to sell me on quitting my current job to take a job with Follett for $15,000 less than what I presently make? Her attitude was "I don't know if it matters to you, but the pay would be..." What the? Then she contacted me again, I refused to call her back. This really sends a message to the candidate that we don't care about you.

Interviewed Jan 2009 in Norfolk, VA (took 1 week)
I filled in an application and received a call the next day to schedule an interview. The interview was one-on-one and I met with the Assistant Manager, who deals with all the hiring. The manager was required to ask me certain "stock" questions that Follett had provided, but they were pretty standard. The questions regarded my ability to multi-task, deal with customers, and ethical procedures. The questions the manager seemed most interested in was the one regarding what to do if I was doing a task and a customer interrupted me. I answered that I would help the customer even if it meant starting my task over, but that I would return to the task immediately. As in any retail environment, helping the customer is key. I was hired within the week after all the interviews were over. The position was initially temporary/seasonal but I performed by job well and they decided to keep me.

Negotiation Details
Since this was a starting cashier position, it seemed stupid to negotiate. I accepted minimum wage, which is what I expected.

Interviewed Jun 2011 (took 3 days)
First phone interview went well with questions concerning specific examples of my previous bookstore management experience. Second phone interview went less well with the same type of questions, but the feedback was to "tighten up my responses". Spent a week doing the requested Powerpoint presentation for a panel interview at Home Office. A week after the presentation I was told that another candidate had been chosen.
The reason given was a concern that I wasn't able to articulate how I would build relationships on campus. I got the impression that the decision had been made within the first 10 minutes of the panel interview. Got the impression that they were more comfortable with recent college grads (read kids, as opposed to a mature professional with years of experience.

Interviewed Jun 2009 (took 4+ weeks)
First you go through an internal application process. Then a recruiter contacts you to notify you if you will be interviewed or weren't qualified to apply. The recruiters are nice and seem caring. After you go through the interview they ask you about your salary expectations and send their notes to the hiring manager. You interview with your potential boss and then wait to see if you got the position.
