Interviewed Jun 2011 in Washington, DC (took 5 days)
I applied for the internship through my programs career services director. I received a phone call to set up an interview about a month later (GAO was behind schedule due to the budget issues).
I had a 1 hour phone interview with two people from offices outside of DC. The questions focused on GAO's core competencies, such as communication skills, analytic skills, etc. I was usually asked to describe a situation that exemplified those skills. I was also asked to explain how I would conduct a study and how I would prepare a speech. The interviewers were friendly and nice, and often asked followup questions.
About 3-5 days after the interview, I received an email offering me a position.

Interviewed Jul 2010 in Washington, DC (took 6 months)
The hiring process up to the interview took about 6 months. I had already accepted another job when GAO called for an interview. After debating merits, I took the interview and asked one of the interviewers via email for a reply ASAP due to my situation. HR got back to me the next day and I accepted their offer.
The interview itself was pretty easy. It consisted of a panel interview asking the basic behavioral questions. I would emphasis teamwork/collaboration, research and writing skills. Also mention any experience you have with interviewing people, editing papers and giving feedback.
The interviewers were friendly.

Interviewed Feb 2010 in Washington, DC (took a day)
I filled out the application on USAjobs.gov. I was called to set up an interview about two months later. My interview was scheduled for my half birthday (February 10, 2010) during the Washington D.C. snow storms so I was stood up for the first scheduled interview, but we re rescheduled :)
I was supposed to be interviewed by a panel, but because there were people missing from the office there was only one gentleman and our conversation was recorded. They asked me about times when I was part of a team, how I prioritized projects, and my writing. It was very conversational and we talked more about his experience after the "interview" portion was over. We had a very honest conversation about the two positions I was being interviewed for and the pros and cons. The people I ended up working with were fantastic. The colleagues I found at the GAO were top notch.

Interviewed Dec 2009 (took a day)
I had a phone interview with a handful of managers and employees. It was fairly unstructured/informal. I was not asked that many questions and there was lots of time to ask questions. Everyone was very nice and seemed interested in my research experience, particularly in how I thought through the research design process.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in Washington, DC (took a day)
The interview included a simple phone interview that last about thirty minutes. I was asked the standard fit questions and briefly asked about my technical background. The interviewers seemed genuine and soundly like they actually enjoyed their work.

The interview was very casual and the interviewers very nice. I instantly felt comfortable, which is unusual for me. It was very conversational. They asked the typical interview questions (e.g., why do you want to work here, tell us more about your interests, skills, etc.)

Interviewed Apr 2008 in Nairobi (Kenya) (took a day)
Googled jobs available and applied online. I was called for the interview by a very couteous lady. I went for the interview and was very well received. I was interviewed by a man for almost one hour and it was excruciating. He had a sense of humor though.

Interviewed Mar 2009 in Washington, DC (took 6 months)
I applied on USAJOBS in November 2008. Got an e-mail from the employer in mid January that they will be calling me to set up an interview. I was offered an option of having an in person or over the phone interview, and I took the phone option. They set up an over the phone interview 2-3 weeks ahead of time, that I had to reschedule because I had a bad cold and was all stuffed up, not good for a phone interview. They were very flexible and we came up with another date another 2-3 weeks into the future. The interview lasted close to 2 hours. I was interviewed by 3 people: 1 HR and two from the area that was hiring. They gave me the timeline when I would be hearing from them, and they contacted me with an offer just when they said they would.
