Interviewed Dec 2011 in Niskayuna, NY (took a day)
There were two phone interviews and then an onsite interview. The procedure was fast and I got to hear back from the hiring manager very promptly after the interviews. There were a lot of technical questions in both the phone interviews. They seem to be very thorough about checking the technical background of the candidate. The onsite interview consisted of technical presentation, technical interview, panel interview and a number of 1:1 interviews.

Interviewed Nov 2009 in Niskayuna, NY (took 2 days)
Blitz interview. We were brought in as a group and interviewed by managers and selected scientists, one on one. The final interview was with HR to discuss salaries, etc..Most interviews were actually with scientists and were technical. The one with the manager was not technical. It was just an overview of everything.

Interviewed Nov 2010 in Niskayuna, NY (took 6 weeks)
Because the interview was based off an employee referral, the first task was to find an approximate match in the posted jobs at gecareers.com. After applying against a close match, telephone interviews followed with the group lead, and then we arranged an all-day interview trip out (GE paid all expenses and for a nice hotel and dinner at the Desmond).
The day's interview consisted of a breakfast with my "sponsor", a presentation (research topic of my choice), followed by panel interviews (one technical, one community - to check if values and interaction style match the group) as well as a number of one on one interviews with HR, the group lead, his boss, and several technical folks. Somewhere in the middle was a group lunch (a chance to get to know some other employees even outside the immediate group), and the end of the day wrapped up with the team withdrawing to compare notes while I was escorted out. (I was later asked to not leave and have a follow on with the manager to discuss the next steps; while he could not make any kind of offer at that point, I took it as a very positive sign).
It was clear that the presentation is very important (HR also attends) and they are looking at more than just what you did, but how you present it to a lay audience (presentation skills, poise, etc.) as well as details of what I contributed (rather than what may have been done by other members of a team). The technical grilling afterwards tests both depth of knowledge on topics that may be of specific interest to the interviewers, as well as breath in terms of applicability of what was done to the wider world. Personally, I rather enjoyed it as it was an opportunity to talk in more detail about my approach to work and ideas for future work.
At the end of the day, I walked away with a pretty good idea of the group I'd be working with (highly skilled and work collegially together), the kinds of problems they were interested in (why they wanted to hire me), and the general kind of work that I'd be doing there (details of course depend both on specific project funding, customer goals and ultimately what the group thought was the best way to attack the problem and provide value to the funding group (internal or external). While there was some grousing about corporate processes (GE is a very large company), the group itself was highly cohesive, loyal to their manager (who himself was fairly hands off - trusted his people to do the right thing so long as decisions were made by the group and blessed by a few leads as "not the wrong way to go") and overall helped me to make a decision about joining as well as helping them make a decision about making an offer.

Negotiation Details
They came up with their best offer, main negotiation points were around starting date and clarifying relo issues. We had plenty of time for pre interview discovery and had set some parameters in place before going out so the process was relatively painless (though somewhat protracted nonetheless).
Other Details
I got the interview through an Employee Referral and the interview consisted of a Phone Interview, a 1:1 Interview, a Group/Panel Interview and a Presentation.

First a phone interview by the lab manager. About one month later, an on-site interview, including a technical presentation to the lab members, a group technical and non-technical interview, and 1:1 interview with HR people and lab manager. Technical questions and behavior questions about 50:50.

Interviewed Feb 2010 in Niskayuna, NY (took 3 months)
Hiring process is very lengthy and they do not bother to inform you about the result of interview on time. It took them one month after each interview to get back to me and they do not reply to your emails. By the time last interview was done and I got the offer I had few other offers, therefore I rdeclined it although I was very interested in working for them.

Interviewed Jan 2008 in Niskayuna, NY (took a day)
For B. S. level candidates, dinner was provided the evening prior to the official interview date. During this time, interviewees met with managers and the technologist who would be leading from interview to interview the next day. Casual conversation was made and candidates were evaluated personality-wise and interest-wise. Each B. S. level candidate interviewed the following day with 5 separate individuals including the hiring manager, Human Resources, and 3 technologist for technical and non-technical interviews. Candidates were also given a tour of the facilities and shown presentations of previous work completed at GE GRC and also intended new technology paths. The general atmosphere of interviewers throughout the full day seemed rather informal with technologists while formal with hiring managers and HR.
