Interviewed Nov 2011 (took 2 months)
Applied through the leadership website, but wasn't called back until referred internally. Have had 3 phone interviews so far but none have been technical. They were mainly situational questions regarding experience to demonstrate hoe you handle tough situations and pressure.
Just have examples of teamwork and challenging situations ready to help you answer succinctly.

Interviewed Apr 2011 (took 5 days)
This was an internal interview for an internal transfer. I spoke with the hiring manager about interviewing, and was encouraged to do so. The hiring manager set up a series of interviews with their colleagues and management. A panel interview was set up with the people that this position would manage. In the end the person who won the position had a lot of support from his former manager, a colleague of the hiring manager.

Interviewed Sep 2011 (took 7 weeks)
Very intense process. Initially submitted resume to internal contact who forwarded resume to hiring manager, who then forwarded resume to human resource department. Was contacted by hiring manager within 3 weeks to schedule panel interview. Panel interview was several hours long, and mostly focused on specifics of the position. Following week I was contacted to schedule a phone interview with the regional manager. Regional manager call was more about the corporate fit, and broader skills the company looks for in an employee, than the specifics of the job. High-caliber interview every step of the way. Contacted by the hiring manager the following week and offered position.

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Los Angeles, CA (took a day)
It was a standard one-on-one interview with someone from HR. The interview began with a "tell me about yourself" statement. Most of the other questions were behavioral. The interview lasted around twenty to thirty minutes or so with some time left over for questions. The person was nice, and answered questions clearly.

Interviewed Jul 2011 in South San Francisco, CA (took 3 months)
Long, elaborate process. The complete process took at least 3 months. Started with recruiter screening phone interview checking for basic language skills, situations (how did you handle this and that). This was followed by subject matter phone interview, approx. 1 hr. Questions specific to the possible roles providing examples is a must. Finally, it was completed by in-person on-site interview series including case study. Quick paced, one after the other meetings with each person focusing on very specific area, team work, stress, how to handle push back by client, etc. Folks are professional throughout the process, smart, high standards.

Reason for Declining

Interviewed Jul 2011 in South San Francisco, CA (took 6 months)
The interview process on the whole took 6 months, which consisted of a phone pre-screen and then the HR called to get all the details and then the hiring manager called, this took 4 months form the time i applied. After a month I was called for a face to face. FTF was a day long process. After almost a month I got the offer.

Reason for Declining
The offer was not that great, tried to negotiate. Also my title was lower than what i had before, so not much of a point.

Interviewed Aug 2010 in South San Francisco, CA (took a day)
I got this position via a staffing agency who did a quick phone interview to pre-screen. Next step was meeting with Genentech directly. They are usually panel interviews. Mine was with the project sponsor, team leader, and one of the senior techs.
The interview, and atmosphere, at Genentech is a lot more about personality and fit and how you get along with the people you will be working with. Now, I'm sure it might be quite different for the people going after biotechnical, scientific, lab-related jobs (aka involved in the process of producing Genentech's products).

Negotiation Details
As this was a staffing agency, there wasn't much room for negotiations and the negotiations were not with Genentech themselves.
Other Details
I got the interview through a Staffing Agency and the interview consisted of a Group/Panel Interview.

Interviewed Jul 2011 in South San Francisco, CA (took 2 weeks)
I was already a contractor/temporary employee, and I applied for the regular/full-time position with the same responsibilities. The hiring manager was already the supervisor I reported to, and I've worked with several of the people I interviewed with in the 1.5 years I was on-site. There was a phone interview with the HR recruiter, who basically chatted with me about my resume, past experiences, what I was looking for in the company, hiring process, and benefits the company offered. I had 3 more in-person 1-on-1 interviews after that, one of which was with the director of the group. There was also a panel interview and another phone interview with other people in the group.
Know what the company/group is looking for. For my position, they emphasized more on the ability to recognize issues, problem solving skills, and creative thinking. There were technical questions, but they weren't the majority. All the interviewers were really friendly, and most of the interviews flowed well. They were more of a conversation or discussion versus one-ended question/answer format.

Negotiation Details
I did not negotiate, but I would strongly encourage anyone/everyone to at least ask! The benefits package/vacation conversion was pre-determined by the company, so not much wiggle room there. Ask for more pay!
