Interviewed Aug 2011 in Cleveland, OH (took 2 days)
After you apply online, if a recruiter likes what they see in your application, they will contact you and conduct a phone interview. During the phone interview they will discuss the position duties, pay, and hours. They will also ask a few questions similar to the types of questions you would get during a real interview ("tell me about a time when..." ,etc).
After the phone interview, if you express interest in the position, you are called in for a group/panel interview, during which you perform a few team exercises, such as interviewing another person, and creating an advertisement. I think this gives the recruiters a chance to evaluate your personality and how you react to different situations.
If you pass the group interview, you are then called in for a one on one interview with both one of the recruiting heads, and the team lead in your department. The questions for this interview consist of a lot of customer service scenarios (what would you do if this happened?) and a lot of "tell me about a time when..." questions. Not extremely difficult, but not the easiest interview I've ever had either. Both the group interview and the one on one interview each took about 1 hour. I mostly enjoyed the group interview and the chance to meet some interesting people.
After the 2nd interview, I didn't get offered the position, but I think it may have more to do with my background and qualifications rather than how I did during the interview. If you know you are qualified and have a background relating to the grocery industry, or are just starting out (need a job while in school, etc). go for it!

Interviewed Mar 2011 in Bedford Heights, OH (took 2 days)
There were no human resources positions posted when I originally explored career opportunities at Giant Eagle, so I submitted my resume without reference to a particular job. I was contacted a few weeks later by a Giant Eagle recruiter about a job opportunity focused on new software implementation and employee training. He asked me some basic questions and then scheduled me for a first round interview phone interview with him later that week. The phone interview lasted about an hour and consisted largely of behavior and scenario based interview questions. The interviewer was very upbeat and easy to talk to. He gave me a good amount of feedback during our conversation. The interviewer then went on to describe further details about the job and then went into more specific details on salary/benefits. He then invited me for a second round interview with a hiring manager, and I scheduled one for the following week.
The 1:1 interview was with a regional hiring manager who worked out of the GE HQ in Pittsburgh. The interview lasted about an hour and a half and was formatted similarly to the phone interview with more behavior and scenario based interview questions. I was asked many details about situations where I had handled specific types of problems in previous jobs and what the outcome was. It was very professional, but I felt comfortable and at ease. I was able to ask questions about GE and get a good sense of the company dynamic, which seemed positive.
I was later offered the position after other human resources issues had been attended to (background check, drug test, paperwork).
