Interviewed Jan 2012 (took 2+ weeks)
First you apply for an open position online. Then, if they like your resume/application, you get a phone screening to ensure you are still interested. Then they schedule a phone interview at a later date which takes about 30-60 minutes. If you do well on that, then you take what they call a profile XT, which is just a basic personality/math/skills test. Finally, after that, they schedule one final one-on-one interview. I was scheduled for two separate 1-on-1 interviews back to back, I don't know if that is typical but that's what happened for me. After the interview, withing a couple of days they give you a call and let you know!

Interviewed Aug 2010 (took a day)
Interview took considerably longer than expected, so if one is on a time constraint when attending an interview with them, make certain to allow an extra hour or two just in case. It was a group style interview, and some of the activities that took place seemed to be irrelevant to the positions, but I soon determined that they were trying to see how one interacts with strangers, and how they react in odd situations, as many positions in this company are in fact customer service based.

Interviewed Dec 2011 (took 3 days)
I originally applied online and in just a couple day I received a call from a recruiter. The phone call was a mini-interview, in which I was asked about my interest in Giant Eagle and why I wanted to work there. The recruiter also described what the responsibilities of the position were and explained what the hourly wage was and gave a brief description of the Food Workers Union. The recruiter then proceeded to ask me if I could come into the store for an interview two days later, and asked when would be a good time for me.
I was told by email to expect the in-store interview to be between 1-2 hours long, and the actual interview lasted about one hour. I was greeted and interviewed by the recruiter who first asked me what days and hours I was available for. Then I was asked maybe about five or so questions which were a mix of situational (Something like, "If a customer does this or asks you that, what would you do?") and questions about prior job experience (Such as,"Explain a time in which __________ happened and what did you do in response.") Then the recruiter told me that the department manager would like to interview me, in which the dept. manager came in and basically asks the same questions that the recruiter did, and then proceeded to give an even further in depth description of the job. The dept. manager then left and a few minutes later the recruiter came back in and offered the position pending the drug test and the background check, then proceeded to do the the drug test.
Overall, the interview was easy. The recruiter made me comfortable and it was easy-going.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Cleveland, OH (took 2 days)
After you apply online, if a recruiter likes what they see in your application, they will contact you and conduct a phone interview. During the phone interview they will discuss the position duties, pay, and hours. They will also ask a few questions similar to the types of questions you would get during a real interview ("tell me about a time when..." ,etc).
After the phone interview, if you express interest in the position, you are called in for a group/panel interview, during which you perform a few team exercises, such as interviewing another person, and creating an advertisement. I think this gives the recruiters a chance to evaluate your personality and how you react to different situations.
If you pass the group interview, you are then called in for a one on one interview with both one of the recruiting heads, and the team lead in your department. The questions for this interview consist of a lot of customer service scenarios (what would you do if this happened?) and a lot of "tell me about a time when..." questions. Not extremely difficult, but not the easiest interview I've ever had either. Both the group interview and the one on one interview each took about 1 hour. I mostly enjoyed the group interview and the chance to meet some interesting people.
After the 2nd interview, I didn't get offered the position, but I think it may have more to do with my background and qualifications rather than how I did during the interview. If you know you are qualified and have a background relating to the grocery industry, or are just starting out (need a job while in school, etc). go for it!

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Pittsburgh, PA (took 1 week)
I applied online. Approximately one week later I was contacted by a hiring manager over the phone, who conducted a brief interview, notified me of the pay rate, average hours, working conditions, and arranged a time for an in-person interview a week later. The in-person interview consisted of two one-on-one interviews, one with the hiring manager, and one with the stocking manager. This was a very relaxed interview, and everyone was very nice. One week later I was offered employment over the phone, and accepted. One note, while it's standard practice to arrive 10-15 minutes early, I would suggest arriving earlier because you will have to check in at the customer service desk which is always very busy.

Interviewed Jun 2009 (took a day)
The HR reps are very nice because they understand that young adults need this job as a summer job. They explain everything thoroughly but the only downside is you MUST join the food workers' union. I like the union but if you don't want to join the union you can't have the job.

Interviewed Jun 2010 in Columbus, OH (took 3 days)
HR called me to set up a time for an interview. I was interviewed soon after arriving, and it was an enjoyable experience. After this, she set up and interview for a position that she believed would best suit me. My second interview was very similar, but of course took place at the store I would be working at. All together, it was a great, and speedy experience.
