Interviewed Mar 2012 in London, England (United Kingdom) (took a day)
The interview was booked through a talent hunter. This was the second time I had interviewed with Goldman Sachs, but having no great interest in working for this firm, I had not prepared at all. The first part of the interview consisted of an introductory part about the work in the department, which was not sufficiently detailed. The I was asked to present the work that I had performed during past jobs and during Phd. Subsequently, I was asked to tell in which fields I considered myself to be strongest. The second part of the interview consisted of two questions, one in probability and the other in number theory. First question was easy, and the second should be easy for those accustomed with number theory.

Interviewed Mar 2011 in London, England (United Kingdom) (took 3 months)
A first telephone interview with just quantitative and brainteaser questions, like solve some differential equations with some tricky change of variable. then a face to face interview, with a group of 5 members of the team, more brainteaser and technical questions like stochastic calculus and programming.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in City of London, England (United Kingdom) (took 3 weeks)
The interview process was very professional. The HR at Goldman Sachs are definately one of the best in the industry. In my impression Goldman Sachs are looking for highly intelligent candidates with no need to show off. Big egos will not fit with the team culture at GS.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in London, England (United Kingdom) (took 4+ weeks)
I applied online, shortly before the deadline. I received a reply in late December, asking to come in for a first-round interview. The interviewer was incredibly friendly, he started with a short introduction of himself and then we continued the interview in a very relaxed, conversation like manner. Be ready to show: Leadership, Teamwork, Problem Solving.
Firm hand shake and a genuine smile on your face. Don't even think about trying to pretend you're someone else, they are too smart not to notice that. Just be yourself.

Interviewed Feb 2011 in London, England (United Kingdom) (took 2 days)
First round is 1:1 interview with someone from department, going through competency based questions and some general logical thinking tests.
Second round involved 3 interviews in a row with department representatives of different levels. A little more specific to the job, testing your general skills for performing the work. Questions on current affairs, sometimes on selected markets that you raise in the dialogue. Also, interested in something beyond finance.
Pretty informal, but make sure that once you raise some topic, you are able to answer additional questions around it.

Interviewed Mar 2010 in City of London, England (United Kingdom) (took 3 days)
The interview of Goldman Sachs on their technology interns is surprisingly non-technical. They do have case-study type of technical interview. But they definitely do not expect any "correct" answer from the applicants but want to observe how applicants analyze the problem at hand and present their solutions.
Other than the technical interview, they have a series of one-to-one or one-to-many interviews; most of them are about getting a better understanding of your work experience and how you work with others.
I quite like people who interviewed me at that time; they are a bunch of direct people, so you can really save bullshits.

Reason for Declining
As an international student, I am not allowed to just take a student leave for an internship in the industry for 3 months. My supervisor and our department PHD tutor resent the idea of students working for banks, so basically they didn't authorise my leave. What a pity!

Interviewed Feb 2011 in London, England (United Kingdom) (took 2 days)
GS did not ask for tests (numerical, verbal reasoning) and did less interviews than other banks. Process consisted of 1 phone interview and 2 onsite interviews. Phone interview was said to be competency based but it was 80% math and 20% competency, be prepared for some straightforward calculations and core math questions. They value speed in answers but correct answers even more. 2nd round consisted of 2 1:2 interviews with brainteasers and finance and valuation questions. Do not be surprised to get a question about the contents of a cube etc. Interviewers were nice although not very responsive. Make sure you do not make any mistakes, are extremely passionate about the firm and i-banking.

I got a phone interview with three associates—was very relaxed, very nice and was general question about the market—what is going on (negative positive trends), what are you investing in (sectors or specific stocks), what are three “themes” going on in the market right now (inflation, sovereign debt, etc) and general fit questions (what are you passionate about, tell me about school what are you involved in)
Second round and final was 1X1 with MD’s and associated again—more technical—what have the different indices (Europe, Asia, and N. America) done YTD, yesterday, what are interest rates at, what are FX spots at, what are the three major components of options, pitch me a stock and some brain teasers.
Overall awesome company, awesome people—tried to make you feel comfortable even when they grill you—and great place if you want to start your career getting a broad asset class exposure.
