Interviewed Apr 2011 in Sydney (Australia) (took 3 months)
The interview process usually consists of 2 phone interviews and 4 onsite interviews. Additionally I have done two post onsite phone interviews. The latter interviews were focused on scalability questions and coding skills. The process was quite good. Recruiters were responsive and supportive. Generally Google test three areas: Algorithms, Scalability and Coding. I have got positive feedback on Algorithms and Scalability. The negative part was the Coding skills part.

Interviewed Jun 2008 in Sydney (Australia) (took a day)
There were 3 interviews scheduled in the morning. The flight from Melbourne to Sydney was also booked for the same morning. The flight got delayed and I reached Sydney only at the time the interview was to start. I reached their office which was very difficult to locate as it was on the top floor of a building with IBM on it.
Interviews were doable, but I was exhausted after having woken up really early and not having eaten much in the flight and having had to rush from the airport. First interview was really bad as I had a tough time concentrating. After lunch there were 2 more interviews and I did well in bot of them. But I knew I had blown it with the first one. I didn't know they had a policy of flying people in the previous evening for early morning interviews. Kinda felt cheated.

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Sydney (Australia) (took 2 weeks)
At first I received a phone interview to discuss what sort of areas of software development I was interested in, a little bit about my background, why I thought I would be a good fit for Google and also received a few questions regarding some common programming questions.
This was then followed by a one on one phone interview with an Engineer from Google who asked me some general problem solving questions, such as how to implement a queue simply using two stacks and how to implement a highly efficient queue using two stacks and another question about calculating the max execution time of a program that had to fit into a certain size of memory on an embedded device.

Interviewed Dec 2008 in Sydney (Australia) (took 2 weeks)
Initially applied for the role but never heard back. Used a contact to pass my information on the recruiter. Had an initial phone interview and was invited for a 1:1 interview on site. Reception not polite, directed me to a sign-in screen and printer and told me wait.
Interview was running late, but at least the recruiter was friendly. Interview lasted for about 20 minutes, and was never contacted back, even though I phoned to check the status of the role several times afterwards.
Finally got a reply, but it was an email to rate their interview process. Never heard back, not even a "Sorry you didn't get the role".
Am much glad that I didn't get the role. Wouldn't have taken it, even if it was offered. Had high thinking of Google before but the interview process changed that.
No, it's not sour grapes. I've been to several interviews at large international companies. This was the worst interview ever.
The engineering departments are excellent to work in, but the marketing or communication teams are not.
