Interviewed Mar 2012 in Dublin, County Dublin (Ireland) (took 1+ week)
The initial communication from Google was very straightforward, they wanted my availability, my CV, and generally more basic details about me. After that was mailed, I got a series of harder questions by mail, once that could not simply be answered without some more thought to them. When that was mail back to them I got a phone interview setup, I was asked lots of skill, math, intelligence and personal questions but I think the most important thing to 'nail' it, is simply to be yourself and be interested in the person interviewing you.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Mountain View, CA (took 4 weeks)
I have interviewed for several positions with Google. All of which would have essentially been lateral moves. Ironically, Google determined I was not technical enough for their teams.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in Mountain View, CA (took 3 months)
1 initial phone screen consisting of standard questions (why interested, what do you have to offer); followed by second phone interview (questions focused on skills and approach); followed by onsite round of interviews (strategic thinking, thought process, hypothetical questions); followed by another one-on-one interview. People were all smart, intense and friendly.

Interviewed Mar 2010 in New York, NY (took 6 weeks)
2 phone interviews. First one asked no questions about my background, only design brainstorming questions:
-How would you design a refrigerator for someone who is visual impaired?
-What could the Microsoft Surface table be used for?
-How would you improve an in car GPS system?
-Is Starbucks instant coffee (via) good or bad for the company?
Second interview got into more technical areas. Asked about background and asked what I would be "known for" at the company.
